Shikhar Dhawan's unbeaten 88 helps Punjab Kings hand Chennai Super Kings their 6th loss
On Monday, veteran opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan outperformed every batter at the Wankhede Stadium. Dhawan scored 88 runs off of 59 balls to take his side's total to 187 runs, which the Chennai Super Kings fell short of by 11 runs.
Punjab Kings finished at 187/4 after an impressive second-wicket partnership between Shikhar Dhawan and B. Rajapaksa. Chennai Super Kings Ambati Rayudu replied with the same vigour but couldn't take his team home as they were restricted at 176/6 in 20 overs.
Shikhar Dhawan creates history at the Wankhede Stadium.
Shikhar Dhawan started the innings with his captain, Mayank Agarwal. However, Agarwal's struggle this season continued as the skipper was caught on the fifth ball of the 6th over, as Punjab scored 37 runs in the power play overs.
After Agarwal's dismissal, B. Rajapaksa joined Dhawan and hit it off from the start. The duo added 35 runs in the next four overs to take Punjab to 72/1 in the first ten overs. Rajapaksa scored 42 runs off of 32 balls with the help of 2 fours and an equal number of sixes.
Chennai finally broke their partnership in the 18th over as the duo shared a 110 runs stand for the second wicket. After Rajapaksa, Liam Livingstone came to the wicket and had a little cameo before being caught out for 19 runs off of 7 balls.
Dhawan remained not-out for 88 runs with Bairstow, who added six runs in the last over. With this great innings, 36-year-old Dhawan became only the second batsman to have 6,000 runs in the IPL after former Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli.
Punjab finished their innings with 187 runs on the scoreboard.
Ambati Rayudu's incredible innings go in vain after a hard-fought chase.
With 188 runs to chase in 20 overs, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Robin Uthappa came in to open for Chennai Super Kings. Chennai had a shaky start after Uthappa was sent back to the pavilion in the second over by Sandeep Sharma.
Mitchell Santner came to the pitch after Uthappa. However, he also seemed to struggle and was finally bowled by Arshdeep Singh in the 6th over for nine runs off 15 balls. The string of dismissals took a toll on Chennai, and they could only score 32 runs in the power play overs.
The required run-rate crossed 11 in an over when Shivam Dube and Gaikwad were on the pitch, and the former parted ways quickly in the 7th over. With Chennai desperately needing a saviour, Ambati Rayudu graced the pitch and tried to form a partnership with Gaikwad.
Rayudu and a Gaikwad added 49 runs to the scoreboard before the latter was sent to the dugout by Kagiso Rabada for 30 runs.
Meanwhile, Rayudu continued to perform and brought up his half-century with a six while Ravindra Jadeja was on the non-striker end.
Rayudu then scored 23 off the 16th overs, which included three consecutive sixes after Chennai was left needing 70 runs in just five overs.
However, Arshdeep Singh balanced the 16th over by just conceding in the next over. Then, in the 18th over, Rayudu was bowled by Rabada for 78 runs off of 39 runs.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni joined Jadeja after Rayudu's dismissal as fans looked up to Dhoni to take Chennai home with another incredible finish.
Although Dhoni hit the first ball of the last over for a six, 27 off six balls might have been too much for a great finisher like Dhoni. The former captain was caught on the 3rd ball of the over as Chennai finally crumbled for 176/6.
This was Chennai's sixth loss in eight matches, while Punjab won its fourth match in eight. Now, Punjab Kings will meet Lucknow Super Giants on April 29, while Chennai Super Kings will clash with Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 1.
