Shai Hope looking to keep Jos Buttler 'under wraps' as West Indies chase series win against England

Shai Hope believes keeping a lid on out-of-form England captain Jos Buttler could go a long way to sealing an ODI series victory for West Indies.

    Jos Buttler. Jos Buttler.

Shai Hope believes keeping a lid on out-of-form England captain Jos Buttler could go a long way to sealing an ODI series victory for West Indies.

Buttler's lean patch at a torturous World Cup in India has followed him to the Caribbean as he was dismissed for three in the series opener in Antigua – his fifth single-figure score in eight innings.

He is regarded as one of England's greatest-ever white-ball batters and instrumental in both ODI and T20 World Cup wins, so Windies skipper Hope is eager to make sure his opposite cannot get going again.

"I know cricket is one of those games that you're just one innings away," Hope said. "We're definitely not going to take him lightly. We know that he's a very key member of that England team.

"As long as we keep him under wraps, I think we're going to be taking the advantage going into the next two games."

Hope went past 5,000 ODI runs en route to a match-winning unbeaten century on Sunday as England's record score in the format at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium was overhauled within a few hours.

"The one thing about the West Indies team is we find a way to create some form of history," Hope said ahead of the second of three matches at the same venue, albeit on a fresh pitch, on Wednesday.

"We've got to continue to push our brand. We need to identify as a group. We're starting to get there.

"It's nice to see that the guys are buying into the culture we're trying to create, so there's only a matter of time before we get to where we want to be."
