Dug Out News: Trivia
Irresponsible play from Rishabh Pant, Delhi Capitals on 16th May 2022, though they had a clinical win over Punjab Kings, raised many questions on Capitals' skipper Rishabh Pant as a batter
Former Indian pace bowler Rudra Pratap Singh reprimanded Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant for batting irresponsibly in most matches, especially the one against Punjab Kings.
While DC posted 159/7 in the first innings, Rishabh Pant lasted on the pitch for just three deliveries. He hoicked Liam Livingstone for a one-handed six, and then to repeat the shot, he came down the track and ended up being stumped out by Jitesh Sharma at just seven off three deliveries.
"As a captain, it's your responsibility to stay there, and he shouldn't have fallen into the trap. As spectators, we love it when there's a battle out there. But the team suffers at the end of it. He had hit a six; hence, another big shot was not needed because if you see he hasn't done too well in this tournament," RP Singh told Cricbuzz.
"He has always had a penchant for playing explosive knocks but we haven't seen it here. Today, he had a chance as it was a critical game. You expect the captain or the main player to blaze away and pull us out of trouble. However, he perished and the Capitals managed 159. The team management also has to think about how Pant has to approach his innings," he added.
Another failed captaincy tactic by Mayank Agarwal
Choosing to bowl first on winning the toss, Punjab Kings got a terrific start getting rid of David Warner on the very first delivery of the match. However, the bowlers lost momentum in between and failed to take wickets.
Aakash Chopra questioned the Punjab Kings skipper's decision not to let Kagiso Rabada bowl his full quota of four overs against Delhi Capitals. Rabada carried figures of 1/24 in three overs.
Aakash Chopra questioned Mayank's handling of Rabada. He elaborated: "Kagiso Rabada was expensive at the start but later he didn't bowl his fourth over. What captaincy you do, I don't understand. The pitch was turning a little, agree Liam Livingstone bowled his overs but not good enough."
The drama unfolded for Punjab as they were stopped from calling Jitesh Sharma back
Of the many moments in Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings' clash, a chaotic scene occurred when Punjab Kings tried recalling Jitesh Sharma back to the dug-out but were intervened by match officials. After Mayank Agarwal got clean bowled by left-arm spinner Axar Patel, to counter the bowler, PBKS wanted to send a left-handed batter, probably Harpreet Brar. However, their plan went awry when all set to take fields; Jitesh Sharma entered the area before realising the actual goal of the team. And when coach Anil Kumble tried to call him back, the umpire stopped from doing so as the batter had crossed the boundary, and as per rules, once he entered the field, calling the batter back wasn't allowed.
