Pat Cummins continues good form for Australia on first day of third Test against Pakistan

Australia captain Pat Cummins continued his brilliant form with a five-wicket haul on the opening day of the third Test against Pakistan, which ended with a tense late appearance from David Warner.

Cummins, who took 10 wickets in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, led the attack with five for 61 as the tourists were bowled out for 313 in Sydney.

By the time the innings was complete there was just one over left for Australia to start their reply and Warner, who is bowing out at the end of the match, opted not to send in a nightwatcher.

Instead, he faced up to all six deliveries from spinner Sajid Khan, hitting his first ball for four before giving himself a scare when he threatened to play on.

The 37-year-old, who put out an appeal for the return of his missing 'Baggy Green' cap ahead of the game, will resume alongside Usman Khawaja on day two.

Pakistan's attempts to avoid a 3-0 series whitewash got off to a terrible start as openers Abdullah Shafique and Saim Ayub were both dismissed for ducks in a new-ball blast from Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

Cummins dominated for the remainder, extending Babar Azam's run of low scores with an lbw in the 11th over and dismissing top-scorer Mohammad Rizwan for an enterprising 88.

Aamer Jamal salvaged a competitive total for his side by smacking 82 from 97 balls at number nine, with nine fours and four sixes, before being last man out to Nathan Lyon.
