Kane Williamson's first international century in over two years placed New Zealand ahead against Pakistan in the first Test.
Williamson scored an unbeaten 105 on Wednesday as the Black Caps reached 6-440 at stumps on the third day, a two-run lead, thanks to two missed stumpings.
Tom Latham also scored his 13th Test century, making him the first New Zealand opener to do so. As the visitors controlled the spinners on a slow-turning pitch, Devon Conway scored 92 runs.
Nauman Ali, a left-arm slow bowler, finished with 2-137 while mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed, who picked up 3-143, failed to exert any control over the batsmen.
Tom Blundell (47) and Daryl Mitchell (42) played serviceable knocks and shared a half-century stands with Williamson against a miserable Pakistani fielding effort.
Captain Babar Azam was one of at least three Pakistan players stricken with a virus and was not on the field at the start of the match. He stayed away until half an hour after lunch.
New Zealand is making its first Test visit to Pakistan since 2002, and the second match will be played in Karachi the following week after Multan was postponed due to weather issues. The two Test matches will be followed by three ODIs, also at Karachi.
