Mumbai Indians vs Kolkata Knight Riders: Can knocked-out MI give the final blow to KKR for their playoff chances
After an entertaining and power-packed weekend, the new day takes us to the 56th match of the Indian Premier League between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders
The two teams had an unfortunate season by not being able to win their crucial games and get the consistency required in this tournament. Mumbai Indians are out of the playoffs race, whereas Kolkata Knight Riders are on the brink, with every match being a do-or-die for them.
Mumbai Indians had a very challenging time as they failed to register even a single win in their first eight matches but will now take on Kolkata tonight after coming with two consecutive wins. They have recently defeated two of the strong teams, Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals and must be carrying confidence. In the matches won, Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma and Tim David looked in really great touch. However, Daniel Sams didn't have a great start but now can perform better. They will look to continue their good performance and give other teams tough competition.
On the flip side, Kolkata Knight Riders, though they had a promising start in the tournament, are seen struggling with the right batting and bowling combinations. Their two retained players have not been able to contribute much and are seen out of the playing XI. The players could not click as a team, thus leading to a downfall. Their power play batting has been the most disappointing for them.
Players to watch out for
Batters: Suryakumar Yadav and Andre Russell
Suryakumar Yadav has been the best batter for Mumbai Indians this season. He has scored 303 runs in eight games and will be a crucial player in their success. Andre Russell has played many matches, winning knocks for KKR this season, and his comprehensive capabilities make him a vital player for the team.
Bowlers: Murugan Ashwin and Sunil Narine
Murugan Ashwin is having quite an impactful play with the ball. He has scalped eight wickets in 7 innings played with an astonishing economy of 7.72 and, thus, can be a game-changing bowler in today's match. However, Sunil Narine hasn't scalped many wickets, but the mystery bowler is giving a hard time to batters on the field. In 11 games played, he has eight wickets but a commendable economy of 5.23 runs, making him an essential player for the team.
Stats to keep an eye on
- Mumbai Indians have won 22 of their 30 games against Kolkata Knight Riders. Their win percentage of 73.33 makes this the most lopsided rivalry in IPL history.
- Rohit Sharma's average of 19.80 in IPL 2022 is his worst in any tournament season.
- Mumbai Indians are set to play their 250th T20 match overall.
In their previous clash of this season, Pat Cummins stole the show by sealing a win for KKR with his 14-ball 50. Though his inclusion in the playing XI remains doubtful, it will be interesting to see what combination of batters KKR will take on MI at Dr DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai.
