Mumbai Indians beat table-toppers Gujarat Titans in a last-over thriller
Mumbai Indians won their second-straight match after doing the impossible at the Iconic Brabourne Stadium, as Gujarat Titans seemed to have lost their luck.
Daniel Sams was the man of the night who kept the Gujarat Titans juggernaut at bay with his last over heroics. Gujarat Titans needed nine off the final over to win, but Sams was able to keep his composure and conceded only 3 in front of the likes of Rashid Khan, Rahul Tewatia, and David Miller.
Mumbai Indians went to bat first and gave Gujarat a target of 178 runs. Gujarat Titans' hammered a 106-runs opening stand and looked well on their way to win. But they couldn't stop the fall of wickets in the second half and lost the thriller match by five runs, finishing at 172/5 in twenty overs.
Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan find their flow back.
Mumbai Indians took on Gujarat Titans in a match that has no significance on the play-off berth qualifications for both franchisees. Gujarat Titans have already qualified for the play-offs, whereas Mumbai Indians are already out of contention.
Gujarat Titans won the toss in the match and chose to bowl first. Both the Mumbai openers produced a quality partnership for the first wicket. Sharma clobbered Joseph for four boundaries and a six in the power play overs, and Kishan also smashed Khan for two boundaries and brought up 50 runs on the scoreboard.
Mumbai Indians hit 63 runs in the power play overs, their best in the season yet. Rashid Khan finally provided the Gujarat Titans with the much-needed breakthrough in the eighth over. Mumbai wound up with 74/1 after skipper Rohit Sharma (43 off 28) tried to experiment with a reverse shot.
Surya Kumar Yadav (13 off 11) came up to the crease and departed in the eleventh over after hitting a six.
Joseph then sent back Ishan Kishan at 45 off 29 balls. Things started worrying for Mumbai Indians as it was speculated that they had already spoiled their brilliant start.
Tilak Varma was on the crease with Kieron Pollard, but the duo could only add eight runs to the scoreboard before Pollard's dismissal. However, Varma and Tim David shifted to the 5th gear afterwards.
While Varma could only score 21 runs, David became a saviour for Mumbai Indians with his quick 44 runs off just 21 balls, helping his side cross the 170-runs mark.
Daniel Sams does wonders for Mumbai Indians in the last over
Wriddhiman and Shubman Gill came up first to chase the 178 runs target that Mumbai Indians put forth. Saha was mainly in a good mood as he sent Bumrah packing with two fours and a six off of Jasprit Bumrah's first over. And then it was Riley Meredith's turn, who also conceded two boundaries.
Gill also played well in the power play overs as the Gujarat Titans totalled 54 runs in the first six overs.
Saha and Gill played with complete harmony as the duo brought up 100 for their team in the eleventh. While both the players brought up their half-centuries as well.
Murugan Ashwin came to Mumbai's rescue with a crucial breakthrough in the thirteenth. He sent Gill (52 off 36) on the first ball, ending the opening pair's 106-runs stand, and Saha (55 off 40) on the final delivery.
The bizarre hit wicket ended Sai Sudharsan's (14) innings, while Hardik Pandya (24) went for an unnecessary single and was run out in the eighteenth over.
Miller hit Bumrah over deep midwicket to bring the Titans within nine off the last over, but they could not score the remaining runs as Daniel Sams bowled an incredible over.
The Mumbai Indians will play Kolkata Knight Riders in on May 9. On the other hand, Gujarat Titans will go up against fellow IPL debutants Lucknow Super Giants on May 10.
