IPL 2022: Highest Team scores in Power play
In short format games like T20 or IPL, the first six overs of powerplay are considered the most crucial for bowling and the batting department
Both the teams try to gain momentum or a stronghold over the game from the powerplay, and these six overs turn out to be crucial decisions for the rest of the game. With just two fielders outside the circle, batters try to dominate the restrictions by scoring in boundaries or sixes. And such powerful powerplay has been witnessed in this season as well, where batters took over the bowlers to fetch as much as possible in six overs.
1. Punjab Kings against Royal Challengers Bangalore (83/1)
Put in to bat first by RCB’s skipper, Punjab Kings raced to score 83 at a loss of 1 wicket at the end of six overs. Jonny Bairstow’s 21-ball 50 powered Punjab Kings to register the highest score by any team in the powerplay of IPL 2022. Bairstow smashed 59 off 22 in powerplay while opening partner Shikhar Dhawan fell for 21 off 15 in the fifth over.
Bairstow started steadily by hitting one-six in the first over by Glenn Maxwell; however, he smashed Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood for 22 runs in the next over and Mohammed Siraj for 13. Fifth over started by a six from Dhawan but got castled by Maxwell. Bairstow compensated for it in the form of 23 runs in the next over bowled by Siraj. His fiery knock helped the team build the highest powerplay score witnessing eight sixes and five boundaries in the powerplay.
2. Delhi Capitals vs Punjab Kings (81/0)
Delhi Capitals has one of the most explosive opening combos in the form of Prithvi Shaw and David Warner. Both the openers were aggressive in their play, completing each other’s intensity of play and playing with a strike rate of over 211.11. The duo in total smashed 17 boundaries and two sixes while chasing the target of 115 set by Punjab Kings. And the duo justified the tag by registering the second-highest total in powerplay by smashing an outstanding score of 81 runs for the loss of no wicket in the first six overs against Punjab Kings.
This was the fourth consecutive fifty-plus opening partnership between the Delhi Capitals openers this year.
3. Chennai Super Kings vs Lucknow Super Giants (73/1)
While CSK struggled throughout this season, struggling to find the right bowling and batting combination, the team scored 73 runs at a loss of 1 wicket in the first six overs against Lucknow due to the stormy batting of Robin Uthappa and Moeen Ali. This was also Chennai’s fourth-highest powerplay score in the IPL history.
In the match, asked to bat first, Robin Uthappa’s bat ran fiercely to fetch his 50 in 25 balls. Moeen Ali scored 32 off 22 and demolished Lucknow’s bowling attack in the powerplay. The players smashed 12 boundaries and three sixes, playing with a strike rate above 186.11.
