M S Dhoni: Captain with the best Sense of DRS Judgement in IPL
Over the years, there have been considerable changes in the Indian Premier League; however, one thing that remained constant is the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni
Considered one of the best captains the world has seen, MS Dhoni has been consistent with his brilliance in cricket from the inaugural season itself. One of the most significant factors that set MS Dhoni apart from other cricketers is his sharpness in judging things from behind the stumps and his cricketing brain. One unique thing about Dhoni's captaincy is his sense of DRS judgements. The DRS system has been a boon for the cricketers, turning vital games into a team's favor. After a specific resistance to the idea, Dhoni embraced the new technology and has since gone on to use it extremely wisely.
The 'Dhoni Review System'!
The Decision Review System (DRS) has also been abbreviated as the 'Dhoni Review System' by the fans and experts, given the recent instances of the Chennai Super Kings wicket keeper's accurate judgments for taking a review whenever the umpires turn down CSK's appeals. Dhoni usually keeps the wickets and has a 360-degree view of the entire ground from his position. The other two having this view on the ground are the bowler, who is bowling and the umpire. Often the bowler misses what has happened in his follow-through, which a wicketkeeper can see. If the umpire makes a wrong decision, the keeper is best positioned to see what has actually happened. More often, when Dhoni called for a review trusting his instinct and what he had seen, which the umpire failed to see, he has proven to be correct with the third umpire overturning the decision.
One of the fans tweeted, “Batsmen should start walking if @msdhoni is asking for a review. Dhoni Review System for a reason.”
Sending back dangerous Chris Lynn with a DRS
Chris Lynn is considered one of the most destructive batters in the world. The talented batter has made his name as one of the premier T20 players in the game and is highly sought-after worldwide. In a match of CSK vs KKR in the 2018 edition of IPL, he seemingly nicked the ball off CSK pacer Lungi Ngidi to which the bowler appealed. But the umpire thought that the ball had only brushed the batsman's pads before going to Dhoni. The CSK skipper had a quick discussion with the bowler and opted to challenge the umpire's decision. He reviewed the decision, and the 'hotspot' confirmed his suspicions and the umpire's decision was overturned. Chris Lynn was given out, and Dhoni's brilliance came to the fore once again. This is one of the many instances where Dhoni showed why he is the master of DRS.
DRS to dismiss destructive De Kock against MI!
Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni once again came up with an accurate DRS against Mumbai Indians in the inaugural match of the previous edition of IPL in 2021, eliminating destructive batter Quinton de Kock. Defending a total of 157 in the third over, CSK's pacer Deepak Chahar trapped De Kock in front of the stumps, but the umpire didn't feel it was out. Dhoni went for DRS after confirming with the bowler that the ball didn't pitch outside the leg-stump. The 'Dhoni Review System' worked quite well again as the umpire had to overturn his decision after a replay showed it was clean LBW. Fans were delighted to see the CSK skipper's brilliant judgment on the review and getting the DRS right. And as most of the time, MS Dhoni was flawless in his decision, and the review gave Chennai the first success. No wonder the DRS is called the Dhoni Review System, and the netizens could not stop recalling the same.
Be it to save non-striker Yuvraj Singh during the India-England bilateral ODIs in 2017 or the number of times as the wicketkeeper to help CSK in the IPL, Dhoni has proved his expertise at using the DRS time and again. There is no doubt why Dhoni is one of the most successful captains when it comes to taking reviews, and we have been witnessing this fact throughout the years.
