Jhulan Goswami Makes History at the Women's World Cup
On March 10, 2022 Indian cricketer Jhulan Goswami made it 39 wickets in total during World Cup's. This record matched former Australian cricket player Lyn Fullston’s tally to become the joint-highest female cricketer in Women’s World Cup history.
With her fifth appearance of ODI World Cups and her second against New Zealand, she dismissed their keeper Katey Martin with 50th over on February 14th, 2019.
She is affectionately known as "Chakda Express" because of her speed during delivery which gives an impression that exhaust gas is coming out from the engine compartment. Instead, it's just sweat releasing from the body due to the high level of physical activity needed for bowling speed.
Jhulan has retained fastest woman bowler status since 2002 when she made debut with 248 scalps being the highest number reached by any woman till date.
India's Jhulan Goswami is the second person on this list with a tally of 37 wickets from 24 matches. Carole Ann Hodges, who was in England, has achieved 39 victims in 20 matches while Fullston (Australia) has racked up 39 victims during just 20 games. Former England spinner Lorraine Mason-Jones boasts of 38 wickets from 22 outings
"That is my job and I often stick to it, but that doesn't mean anything." Jhulan went on to say. "If you play for a long time, you will experience individual milestones. Yes that does make me happy because it means I am achieving something more than just being an ordinary player." Although she had achieved one milestone in the match when she was named Man of the Match.
Jhulan's Journey
Jhulan's growth as a reliable bowler for India has been evident over the years. The veteran pacer was previously asked about the possibility of breaking Fullston's record of 39 World Cup wickets.
One day prior to her match against New Zealand, she had undermined the significance of hailing as a world record holder and instead, concentrated on the team as a whole. "Honestly speaking, I didn't know that...I am not aware of that," Jhulan said in response to being asked if she knew what full-time WBWCI meant (World Bowling Women's Championship).
But rather than focusing on winning such titles or even competing with other bowlers who have achieved this goal before her (as it would be too much stress), Jhulan continued by explaining how important it is for an experienced member like herself to play well and help provide early breakthroughs at crunch goals during contests.
"If you play for a long time, you are going to achieve some individual milestones. Yes that gives me great joy because I enjoy contributing to the team and they win," said Jhulan. "Personal milestones don't matter as much to me; I am an absolute team player."
Key Moments of the match
Although she certainly unlocked a milestone, it was Pooja Vastrakar who emerged as the top wicket-taker on Thursday, claiming four wickets in total. In the 46th over, Pooja delivered two consecutive and brilliant yorkers to eliminate Lia Tahuhu and Jess Kerr.
Besides intimidating deliveries, Pooja's performance on the field was also a spectacular sight. She ran out Aussie opener Suzie Bates towards the early part of the match and gave just 34 runs in ten overs.
