IPL match preview: Punjab Kings v Delhi Capitals
The Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals will meet for a key 2023 Indian Premier League fixture in Dharamsala.
Delhi are at the bottom of the 10-team standings and have been ruled out of contention for a play-off berth. Punjab, however, can still graduate to the next stage of the tournament. They will definitely need to win here, though.
The Capitals and Kings met as recently as last week, when Punjab triumphed on the back of a century from Prabhsimran Singh and four wickets from Harpreet Brar. Both those players could be big assets again in this match.
Delhi have won just four matches in 12 attempts this season. Two of those came in their last four matches, so there is a little bit of momentum to build on. They are effectively in a battle with the Sunrisers Hyderabad to avoid the bottom of the table.
Punjab exposed Delhi's familiar failings recently and might do so again. This will be the first time a match has been played in Dharamsala this IPL season. The pitch should be fresh and full of runs. The captain to win the toss might opt to bat second and chase, though.
Delhi have a dominant head-to-head record over Punjab. The Capitals have won four of their last five matches against the Kings.
South African batsman Rilee Rossouw is important to Delhi's middle order - and could even be deployed as an opener. He has put in a few quick cameos this season, but hasn't really had the chance to crack on. This could be his cue.
Sam Curran has taken just two wickets in his last seven matches for Punjab. Conditions in Dharamsala, however, could suit the England left-arm seamer, who can deliver with the bat as well.
Delhi could just spoil Punjab's ambition to push for a play-off berth here. There will be more pressure on the Kings, who have plenty to play for, than the Capitals, who effectively have nothing to lose.
