IPL Archives: Highest and the lowest total of Indian Premier League
Over the years in the Indian Premier League, we have seen several records broken. Many great players have taken this league to a new level, and some young names have made their careers through this tournament
In the fifteen editions of this grand league, we have seen many teams smashing huge runs, whereas some teams are seen collapsing with their poor performance. While the league has seen a total score of 260 plus being possible, some team has also fallen below 50 runs. Let us look at the highest and the lowest total score in the history of IPL so far.
The highest total in IPL
In the 31st match of the 2013 edition of IPL, Royal Challengers Banglore clashed against Pune Warriors India, led by Angelo Mathews. However, nobody had ever thought, even in their dreams, that this match would be one of the most incredible batting displays in IPL history. Winning the toss, PWI skipper Angelo Mathews asked the RCB to bat first. However, he had no idea what he had decided would be a massive storm over Pune Warriors. Universe Boss and Dilshan walked in to open the innings for RCB. As from the first over itself, Gayle started to justify his title of 'Universe Boss' with monstrous sixes. Gayle's bat started raining sixes all over the ground, and the opponent's bowling attack seemed helpless in front of the West Indies' dominance.
With no bowler to withstand in front of Gayle, he scored the highest individual total of 175 runs taking RCB's total to 263 for a loss of 5 in 20 overs. Gayle's innings were supported ably by opener Tillakaratne Dilshan, who was part of a 167-run opening stand, an IPL record, during which he only made 33. He quickly ceded the floor to Gayle and played some beautiful, text-book shots through point and down the ground. Unlike Dilshan at the start, AB de Villiers was the dominant partner in the Warriors' ruin at the death, thrashing 31 in just eight balls in a stand worth 44. This turned out to be the league's highest-ever total, and until now, no team has even come closer to this gigantic total. The Warriors eventually lost the match as they could only manage to score 133 in their 20 overs.
Lowest Total in IPL history
The Royal Challengers recorded 263 as the highest score in the history of IPL with the help of Gayle's 175. With this unimaginable record, RCB also holds the record for the lowest score in the league's history.
In the 2017 edition of IPL, the Royal Challengers Bangalore were having a dismal season; however, the batting display they showed against Kolkatta Knight Riders left everyone in an absolute shock. For Match 27 of the 2017 edition of IPL, Gautam Gambhir led KKR and was hosting the Royal Challengers at the Eden Gardens. RCB's skipper Virat Kohli won the toss against Gautam Gambhir and invited KKR to bat first. KKR's destructive all-rounder Sunil Narine came to open the inning for KKR along with their skipper Gautam Gambhir. Both the openers smashed numerous boundaries against the Challengers.
However, they got one breakthrough against the explosive batters, and KKR lost their first wicket at the third ball of the fifth over when the Knights scored 64. With the loss of this first wicket, Kolkata could never recover again and went for 93 for 6 in just the next five overs. The tail-enders tried their best, and with their efforts, they eventually took the total to 131, which was a low but defendable total. With this low target to chase and having some great batsmen from the world in the squad, the win looked quite sure for the Challengers. However, the Knight Riders had some other plans for Bangalore.
In RCB's inning, skipper Virat Kohli and their destructive star batter Chris Gayle walked in to open the inning. In the third inning ball, KKR gave the first blow to RCB with the golden duck of in-form batsman Virat Kohli. Eventually, the batting line-up collapsed with early wickets of AB de Villiers, Mandeep Singh, and Kedar Jadhav. Consequently, RCB was reduced to 4 wickets for 40 runs in just 6.1 overs.
However, Chris Gayle somehow managed to withstand this collapse, but no one expected what would come forward. In the 7th over, RCB lost their fifth wicket with the dismissal of Chris Gayle at a score of 7. After this, KKR's destructive pacers Colin de Grandhomme and Chris Woakes started rattling RCB's remaining tail-ender, and RCB's batting order collapsed catastrophically. On the fourth ball of the tenth over, KKR completely demolished RCB with Chahal's wicket at 49, which turned out to be the lowest ever by any team in IPL. None of the Bangalore batters could reach the double-digit mark in a dismal batting display, with Kedar Jadhav's nine being the highest. The big names for RCB failed catastrophically with Virat Kohli (0), AB de Villiers (8), and Chris Gayle (7), and that sort of explained the misery of the RCB. RCB's previous low was 70 against Rajasthan Royals in 2014.
