IPL 2022: Underperforming Teams in IPL history
While there have been a few addition and dissolution of certain teams in IPL over the years, let's look at the teams who have suffered the most losses in the IPL
Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals is topping the list of this undesirable record of most losses as a team in IPL history. Out of the 224 matches played, they have lost 118 games. The Delhi-based franchise has a win percentage of 45.94. They are one of those franchises who never had the privilege to lift the IPL trophy. They made it to the playoffs five times only (2008, 2009, 2019, 2020, and 2021) and four times finished at the bottom of the table (2011, 2013, 2014, and 2018). This season, they were a strong team but failed to reach the playoffs, losing the knockout match against Mumbai Indians.
Punjab Kings
The second franchise on this list is Punjab Kings. Having a win percentage of 45.87, they have lost 116 matches out of the 218 played in the cash-rich league. Since then, they managed to reach the playoffs in 2014 and have failed to make a mark. This year, they also started with a bang but soon struggled to score or defend. One of the significant fallouts of the franchise has been their inconsistency with the captaincy. They have changed their captain 13 times, the current captain being Indian opener Mayank Agarwal.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Formerly led by Virat Kohli, the franchise has faced the third-most losses in IPL history. And it's the third franchise after Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, who have not yet been entitled as IPL champions. They have lost 112 matches of the 225 played, carrying a win percentage of 48.64. Despite having big names like Ab de Villiers, Virat Kohli, and Chris Gayle serving the team, they failed to win the trophy. However, this year under the leadership of Faf du Plessis, the team has fared well in reaching the playoffs. They have reached playoffs five times, and it is one of the favourites to lift the trophy this year.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders, co-owned by Bollywood stars, has sustained 106 losses in 223 matches, with a winning percentage of 51.56. The two-time champions have been struggling after their championship win in 2014. Now under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, the team started well this season but soon collapsed to find its place at the seventh spot in the points table.
Mumbai Indians
The most unexpected name in the list of five-time champions is Mumbai Indians. They have lost 98 matches out of 231 played in IPL history. They have a winning percentage of 56.7. Despite being fifth in the list of most losses in IPL history, the franchise tops the list of most wins (129) in IPL history. All of their five trophies have come under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. They failed to have a good season this year but played a crucial role in deciding the top four for the edition. They have been the perfect team in the IPL and will look to bounce back stronger next season.
