IPL 2022 finals, Gujarat Titans vs. Rajasthan Royals highlights: Gujarat Titans dream run with maiden IPL title after beating Rajasthan Royals
The Gujarat Titans put on a dominant performance in front of their home crowd of over 1 lakh fans at the Narendra Modi Stadium to defeat the Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets and win their maiden Indian Premier League trophy
The debutants did the unthinkable after finishing the league stage on the top and then winning the knockout stage in fashion to etch their name on the coveted title.
Skipper Hardik Pandya was the star of the match, who ensured that his team didn't succumb to pressure and played good cricket throughout.
Pandya led the Gujarat Titans' bowling attack, clinched 3 wickets at a crucial stage to rattle Rajasthan Royals, and then contributed to the chase alongside Shubman Gill and David Miller to ensure that they took the trophy home.
Rajasthan Royals fall out in front of an incredible Gujarat Titans bowling effort
Rajasthan Royals' captain Sanju Samson won the toss and chose to bat first at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler started things off for the inaugural IPL winners and looked good in the initial overs. Meanwhile, Jaiswal was on the riskier side of the playfield and played some big shots while Buttler tried to take it slow.
However, Jaiswal's big-hitting approach cost him dearly in the fourth over as he got caught on a Yash Dayal delivery with only 22 runs to his name in 16 balls, an inning that consisted of 1 four and 2 sixes.
Skipper Sanju Samson then joined the fray with Jos Buttler and played with the same approach of that as the Englishman. The duo concluded the powerplay with 44 runs on the scoreboard as spin master Rashid Khan was introduced into the bowling attack in the first six overs.
Jos Buttler tried to break free from the slow play by hammering New Zealand's Lockie Ferguson for successive boundaries. Meanwhile, Ferguson was throwing missiles and clocked the fastest ball of the tournament with a speed of 157.3 KMPH.
However, Rajasthan's woes worsened as Hardik Pandya took matters into his hands and removed his counterpart Samson in the ninth over at 14 off 11.
Gujarat Titans then struck big again, taking out Devdutt Padikkal at only 2 runs.
Hardik Pandya then took out the most dangerous man in sight, Jos Buttler, in the thirteenth over to crush Rajasthan Royal's hopes. Buttler played relatively well and went back to the dugout at 39 off 35 balls.
Pandya then took out Shimron Hetmyer to finish with figures of 3/17.
Riyan Parag and Trent Boult tried to take Rajasthan over the 150-runs mark but failed to do so and finished with 130/9 in 20 overs.
Gujarat Titans play smartly to chase a low total
Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill started things for Gujarat Titans. However, Rajasthan was in no mood to concede early.
Rajasthan bowlers poured their all into the field and clinched early wickets of Saha (5 off 7) and Wade (8 off 10), with Prasidh Krishna and Trent Boult taking the matter into their hands in the power play overs only.
Ashwin came on in the 12th over, and Hardik (34 off 30) decided to go after him, scoring fours and sixes off successive balls to take Gujarat to 77 for two in 12 overs.
Although Chahal took out Pandya in the thirteenth over, the game was in the hands of the Gujarat Titans as Shubman Gill and David Miller finished unbeaten at 45 off 43 and 32 off 19, respectively.
Gill wrapped things up in fashion with a thunderous six off of an Obed McCoy delivery, much to the joy of the 1 lakh cricket fans at the Narendra Modi Stadium and those watching at home as Gujarat Titans finished the season on top with a deserving title win.
