Indian Premium League : Winning and losing coaches of the 2022 edition
Till now, the Indian Premier League has tested several players and their abilities to perform on this platform. Not only has it tested players, but it has also analysed the coaches and their ability to mould a perfect team. Several coaches shined well, whereas some underperformed as their team disappointed everyone with their performance.
A team’s performance depends not only on players but also on the quality of coaches and supporting staff they have. This year, some of the teams have been blessed with renowned and experienced coaches, whereas some teams have inexperienced and newly assigned coaches. However, not all veteran coaches have succeeded in their teams, and the teams are underperforming against all expectations. While some new coaches have led their teams brilliantly, and their teams are performing well in the tournament till now.
Let us discuss these coaches who performed brilliantly despite their inexperience and the coaches whose teams have underperformed despite their vast experience in the tournament.
Genius minds meet new talents and lead to success.
While talking about the coaches who have led their team pretty well, there are a few names such as Ashish Nehra, Sanjay Bangar, Kumar Sangakkara, Lasith Malinga, Andy Flower, Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting and many others. It is Ashish Nehra’s first year with the new franchise Gujarat Titans; however, he has led his team exceptionally well to the top of the points table despite being a new team. Sanjay Bangar, who is currently the head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore, has been coaching for the last few years, but this year is his first as the head coach of RCB. He has been leading this team quite impressively as the team is at the second position with their outstanding performance in the league. Talking about Rajasthan Royals’ coaching staff, it is the first year of the great Sri Lankan batter Kumar Sangakkara with the team as the head coach. Also, Lasith Malinga is their bowling coach for the first time this year. And still, Rajasthan Royal has been clinical throughout the tournament till now under Sangakkara and Malinga’s coaching. Andy Flower has been appointed as the head coach for the newly emerged Lucknow Super Giants. The franchise has won 4 out of seven matches and is currently in fourth place in the points table displaying an outstanding performance against some challenging teams under Flower’s coaching. Delhi Capitals’ head coach Ricky Ponting has been working with the young and new team pretty well to bring the best out of them under the captaincy of Rishabh Pant. Last year Delhi Capitals qualified for playoffs, and this year too, they are performing reasonably well.
Experience coaching isn’t available for rescue, making teams lose.
Although some coaches have been doing significantly well with their franchise despite being inexperienced, certain coaches are failing to make a mark despite being experienced in their field.
Considered two of the most successful franchises in IPL, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are both at the bottom of the points table with terrible performance in the league till now. Along with players, coaches are also being questioned for the poor display of the teams. Stephen Fleming, the head coach of CSK currently, has been with the franchise since 2009 and has also helped them clinch the title four times. However, even with the tremendous experience, Fleming is not able to help CSK this year as the team has lost 5 out of 7 matches till now. Mahela Jayawardene, the current head coach of the five-time winners Mumbai Indians and has been with the franchise since 2017. In his first year as coach of MI, the team clinched the IPL title. The team also won the title in 2019 and 2020 under Jayawardene’s coaching. However, this year, he is failing to make it.
MI has been incapable of registering a single win in seven matches until now, and the coach is questioned for the poor performance of players. Anil Kumble, the head coach of Punjab Kings and has also coached the Indian team, also failed to help his team this year. PBKS has managed to record just three wins in 7 matches despite the tremendous experience of Anil Kumble in his coaching career. Another coach who failed to succeed his team this year is Brendon McCullum, the head coach of KKR, despite his coaching experience with the franchise since 2019. The team has just managed to win three out of 7 seven matches till now.
As it has always been saying, “Your greatness is determined by your game, not your name!” Some coaches have been proving this brilliantly this season; however, some great names have failed to provide justice to their experience due to poor displays of performance from the teams.
