Indian Premium League : Most sixes in an innings till date for IPL 2022
In short formats like T20, a batsman's ability to hit quick boundaries is challenged, and a great T20 batsman is recognized for his swift power hitting abilities. The West Indies batsman Chris Gayle has smashed the most number of sixes in an innings, which is 17 sixes.
This inning came against Pune Warriors in 2013, in which he scored the highest score ever of 175! No batsman has even come close to this achievement, and the 'Universe Boss' still rules the record for most sixes in an inning! In the fifteenth edition of the league this year, many batters have smashed numerous sixes in a single inning. Let us have a look at some of these top batters who have hit the most number of sixes in an inning in the current edition of IPL.
Jos Buttler
The right-handed opener is leading the side pretty well with his performances. Rajasthan Royals opener Jos Buttler has equalled the record of smashing the most number of sixes in an inning in IPL 2022. The batter smashed nine sixes in his knock of 116(65) against the Delhi Capitals. He played the scintillating innings at a commendable strike rate of 178.46. Apart from 9 sixes, he also pulled nine boundaries to amass the total. Apart from this, he played a knock of 103 runs against KKR, decorating the stadium with five sixes and nine boundaries. After scoring his third ton of the season, he became the first overseas player to score most hundreds in a season.
Robin Uthappa
Robin Uthappa, currently playing the opener role for Chennai Super Kings, tops the list with nine sixes in an innings. The batsman smashed nine sixes, scoring 88 runs off 50 bowls with an appreciable strike rate of 176, helping the team to record a mammoth score of 215! Uthappa's fearless knock was a delight for cricket fans as he was raining sixes all over the ground. He played an essential partnership along with Shivam Dube sealing the victory for CSK. Uthappa is a perfect blend of technique and power-hitting, which makes him invincible against opponents. He is among the few players who have been part of the league since the very first season. However, in the current season, the team has backed him incredibly, which gave him the confidence to play his natural game, proving the team's faith.
Shivam Dube
The young Indian all-rounder, who is currently part of CSK's campaign, stunned everybody in the 22nd match of the league against RCB with his sensational knock of 95 runs. Missing his century, just five runs short, Dube scored 95 runs off just 46 deliveries smashing eight sixes with a thunderous strike rate of 206. This is the joint-second most number of sixes hit in an inning, along with Andre Russell. He outplayed each bowler with his elegance and power, and his crucial knock assured CSK's first tournament victory. Dube is considered an all-rounder; however, he is famed for his quick power-hitting and great accuracy. He has shined as an essential asset in the team's batting line-up with his performance over the years.
Andre Russell
No one can match the West Indian dominance when it comes to power hitting. Andre Russell, the destructive KKR all-rounder, ranks second along with Shivam Dube in the list due to his unimaginable power hitting. The all-rounder smashed eight sixes in his lightning inning in the 8th match of the league against Punjab, sealing the victory for KKR. He scored a crucial knock of unbeaten 70 runs off just 31 balls, with a phenomenal strike rate of 225, which ultimately turned the result in KKR's favour. Russell has constantly been proving his potential through his terrific knocks throughout his career. He is an absolute beast in the game, and his terror amongst the opponents will never fade.
Faf du Plessis
Faf is known for his destructive performance and six-hitting abilities, which have been seen throughout IPL for many years. The former South African skipper is currently leading RCB in the tournament and playing an essential role in the team's batting line-up by playing crucial knocks. In the 3rd match of the tournament, between RCB and PBKS, Faf smashed seven sixes to destroy the opponent's bowling. This is the third most number of sixes hit in an inning by any batsman this year, till now! In his hurricane inning, the skipper scored 88 runs off 57 balls with an impressive strike rate of 154.
Amongst the player who matches Gayle's potential is Andre Russell and Robin Uthappa. Although these players have smashed a huge number of sixes in an inning, nobody was even close to Gayle's record, which displays what level of innings Chris Gayle played. However, Gayle's record probably seems unachievable in the future and perhaps the only one to achieve this was and will be Chris Gayle himself.
