Indian Premier League: Glenn Maxwell and David Warner react to Cameron Green's IPL bid

During the IPL 2023 mini-auction, when teams were going all guns blazing for Australia all-rounder Cameron Green, his international teammate Glenn Maxwell sent out a tweet that many found hilarious and others relatable.

Reaction on Cameron Green's IPL bid. Reaction on Cameron Green's IPL bid.

It simply said "Cmon Greeny" and was accompanied by four moneybag emojis. In many ways, it is entirely relatable.

Fans tend to forget it, but even elite sportspeople are doing what they do because they want to get paid – and paid well.

If a team willing to spend a large amount of money on your services? Well, then, go and get that bag, as the kids these days say.

However, there is a flip side to being a top-level cricketer, especially one who is seen as a future all-format star like Green.

It was best spelt out by David Warner himself, no stranger to balancing being an all-format player and an IPL star.

"There is going to be a lot of pressure, a lot of expectation; that's the nature of the beast when it comes to the IPL," he said.

"When you see that kind of money thrown around, there's going to be a lot of pressure on you."

"The most crucial thing for Cameron, and this is a little bit of advice I can give him, is that we went through a four-Test match series, went on to play an IPL series and didn't have that Ashes at the back end."

"You'll have a long time away from home as a young kid. How he deals with that himself (is the question)."

"He's got great support, I'm sure, with his management and his family. That's going to be his biggest hurdle. It's not about going out there and performing; he'll do that; that's inevitable."

"It's making sure that he's in the right frame of mind to go out there and deliver with the Test matches, then going onto the IPL and the Ashes and the World Cup. There's a lot of cricket to be played, so good luck to all of us."

Warner further suggested that Green, like other players, could have to give up a format as he progresses in his career.

"I think Cameron Green is the perfect example of a youngster coming through who can play all three formats."

"He will have a big decision on his hands in a couple of years with his body. Shane Watson is a perfect example."

"You've got Ben Stokes, who gave away one format (ODIs), it's going to be challenging."

Warner, too, speaks from a place of experience and maturity, realizing the pitfalls of being a player capable of playing all formats.

Indeed, Green will eventually have to choose between an international career in all formats or being the kind of player who gives up a format to prolong his career.

It will be a challenge when that day does turn up. However, Green is still a young cricketer – so as a fan, it is best to enjoy him playing all formats while you can.
