India VS South Africa ODI: The Four Key Moments of the T20I Series
The India vs South Africa T20I series was good from the Indian perspective. India ended their long-lasting jinx against South Africa – India's first-ever T20I series win at home against the Proteas – and they went into the World Cup with winning momentum
However, aside from that, there were quite a few noteworthy moments in the series. Here we look back at what we think are the four most memorable moments from the T20I series.
Rilee Rossow's free hit 'hit-wicket' – Rossow was the man whose name was on most people's lips after the second and the third T20I. But it was the third T20I in which he shone, scoring an unbeaten ton as South Africa won a consolation victory.
However, his most talked about moment was a free hit of Mohammed Siraj. On the ball that was the free hit, Rossouw ended up going too deep into his crease, and his foot dislodged the bails. He hit the ball for six anyway and wasn't adjudged out because, on a free hit, the only way to be out is if you've run out.
Suryakumar Yadav is cementing his spot – Most fans knew that Suryakumar Yadav would be a vital cog of this Indian team going into the World Cup. After the series against Australia and South Africa, even those who may have doubted him probably now know the value that 'SKY' brings to the Indian middle order.
He proved his worth yet again in this series, scoring some outrageous boundaries and playing shots all around the park. Given India is already missing Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah, they better wrap 'SKY' in cotton wool before the World Cup!
The Dinesh Karthik VS Rishabh Pant debate comes up again – Given India would be missing some key players going into this series, there was always a chance that Rishabh Pant might get some game time. And he did in all of the matches, but it was the third match which finally saw him shine. Dinesh Karthik again scored better than Rishab Pant furthering his stake as batter cum wicket-keeper in team India.
Rishabh Pant's best knock of the series – 27 off 14 balls – came as an opener, suggesting that his future lies atop the order. However, with both Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul in the team, Pant may have to wait for his chance atop the order.
Deepak Chahar was not running out the non-striker Stubbs – The art of running out the non-striker, sometimes crudely referred to as 'Mankading', is all the rage in the cricketing world again. This comes after India women's team all-rounder Deepti Sharma ran out non-striker Charlotte Dean in the final ODI of the three-match series between India and England.
However, not everyone is keen to hop on the bandwagon – despite the play being well within the rules. Chahar had the chance to run out Tristan Stubbs similarly in the final T20I but chose not to, only warning the young batsman. The ploy worked, but the debate about what constitutes the 'spirit of the game' will undoubtedly rage on.
