India VS Australia T20I: Will the inclusion of Jasprit Bumrah solve India's death-over problem?
At the onset of Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma's era, conservative batting was considered a primary concern in T20Is
Now a few months down the lane, batters perhaps have taken a substantial leap of faith, and their hard work is evident on the field. Their improved batting, and approach have been one of the biggest positives in the past few matches but somehow have put the bowling department in question.
In the last three T20Is, the bowling unit failed to defend 54, 42, and 41 runs in the previous four overs. The irony in these matches is that they batted well to post a challenging and well-defendable total on the board. Of all the seamers, Bhuvneshwar Kumar received a lot of backlash for conceding 16, 14, and 19 runs in the penultimate over.
There was nothing wrong in giving Bhuvneshwar Kumar the death over as he was the most experienced and best available option. Though his bowling was stunning in the powerplay, it looked out of control in death overs, failing to control the flow of runs. Former Indian player Irfan Pathan firmly stated his opinion to use Bhuvneshwar Kumar's complete quota in the powerplay itself, as he is unbeatable in those overs.
When the team failed in the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup, many thought that the return of Harshal Patel and Jasprit Bumrah would solve the issue. But in the first T20I against Australia, when Harshal Patel failed to make his impact, the whole cricket fraternity talked about the effect of the absence of India's spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah.
"These aren't great signs ahead of the T20 World Cup. When we didn't do well at the Asia Cup, we thought it was because we didn't have Harshal Patel and Jasprit Bumrah. Harshal Patel was there in the side for this game, but we still ended up on the losing side," said RP Singh.
After the loss in the series opener, all-rounder Hardik Pandya also said, "We all know what he brings to the table and how important he is for us. Jasprit not being there obviously makes a big difference."
As most of the bowlers have failed to put on an impressive show in death overs, apart from Arshdeep Singh, all hopeful eyes would now be on Jasprit Bumrah. After returning from injury, it will be interesting to see what difference he can bring to the team.
Aakash Chopra said, "The venom was not seen in the bowling. "We are not getting anyone for the death bowling, and Jasprit Bumrah can't provide a solution for every problem. Harshal can't manage in death overs as he hasn't played a lot of cricket."
