India VS Australia T20I: Bhuvneshwar Kumar and 19th Over Jinx
Australia defeated India in the first three-match T20I series by four wickets at Mohali. The pitch was a scorcher for batting as both sides' batters scored 419 runs to entertain the crowd
While Indian batters did a brilliant job posting a total of 208, Indian bowlers failed to impress as the team lost the match comfortably in the end. Axar Patel returned with figures of 4-0-17-3, whereas Bhuvneshwar Kumar once again struggled in the death overs.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar's death over bowling has been under the radar since the Asia Cup. From conceding 19 and 14 runs in the crucial Super 4 encounters of the Asia Cup to being smashed for 16 runs by Australia in the 19th over, death over scare hovers over the team. Bhuvneshwar Kumar conceded 31 runs in the 17th and 19th over, whereas Harshal Patel conceded 22 runs in the 18th over against Australia.
Witnessing the bowler and team struggling to defend even a big total owing the 19th over in three consecutive matches, cricket pundits flooded the internet with their suggestions and comments.
"Saying this again use Bhuvi for only one over in last 5 overs," Irfan Pathan tweeted.
Sunil Gavaskar said, "It's a real concern. When somebody like a Bhuvneshwar Kumar is going for so many runs every single time, when he is expected in 18 deliveries in 3 matches that India have lost against Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia, he has given away 49 runs which is almost like 3 runs per ball. Someone of his experience and his calibre, you expect maybe he would give 35-36 runs. That really is an area of concern."
Some fans also questioned Rohit Sharma's decision to repeat the same choice despite failures. Users wrote, "Can you find why Rohit keeps bowling Bhuvi at the death."
The experienced pacer conceded 52 runs in his four-over spells for the first time in T20Is. Though he looks in control with the new ball, bowling in the penultimate over has been miserable, costing India their possibility of winning the close games.
"There will be concerns here and there (but) we have got to trust our boys," said Hardik Pandya on death over failures.
