IND vs SL 2nd Test: The DOMINATION continues - 15th consecutive Test series win for India at home
India won the toss and decided to bat first. However, it hardly mattered eventually as the team went under pressure on a pitch that played tricks right from the beginning. It was a test dominated by the bowlers, despite the hefty knocks from players like Shreyas Iyer and Dimuth Karunaratne. Shreyas Iyer's 92 in the first inning ensured India had a competitive total on board.
Another Test concluded well within three days. A comfortable victory, done and dusted within 8 sessions.
India's dominance
India inflicted another series whitewash as they thrashed Sri Lanka, a heavy defeat of 238 runs in the 2nd Test in Bengaluru. Well, it's also Rohit Sharma's 4th consecutive series win across formats since being appointed as a full-time captain.
Rohit Sharma, on his win, said, "It's been a good run, and I have enjoyed it personally and as a team. We wanted to achieve a few things as a team, and we have done that. We have seen Jadeja grow as a batter, and he seems to get better and better. He strengthens the team, and he's also improving as a bowler. And he's a gun fielder, so he is a complete package. Shreyas just carried on from where he left off in the T20 series against Sri Lanka. He seemed to carry that form into the Test series."
Bowler's dominated Test Match.
Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami blew Sri Lanka away under the lights as the ball swung corners. Six wickets in the session and four more on the second morning. The Indian bowlers bundled out Sri Lanka for their second-lowest score (109) against the hosts in Test cricket.
With a big lead of 143 runs on board, India took full advantage and resumed batting positively in their second dig. They declared at 303 for 9, setting a record target of 447 for Lankan batters. Rishab Pant's 28-ball 50, the fastest by an Indian in Tests, stole the show, while Shreyas Iyer made the 50s in both innings.
Fight back from Sri Lanka
The target was a huge challenge, especially on such a tricky surface. It wasn't happening, but Sri Lanka didn't sink in, not at least their captain, who notched up his 14th Test hundred and delayed the inevitable.
Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne said, "I would have been happier if we had won the match. Once I got in, I knew I could get a big one. As a team, we know we are a decent team. We didn't get enough good starts to capitalise. And as a bowling unit, we gave too many loose balls. (On Lakmal) One of the best I have seen in my career. I am very happy for him that he's going to county cricket, and I know he will do very well there as well."
The Indian bowlers have been relentless. Ravichandra Ashwin, with four wickets, went past South African legend Dale Steyn's tally of Test wickets, and Jasprit Bumrah was the other standout Indian bowler in this match. Rishabh Pant became Player of the Series and Shreyas Iyer Player of the match.
24 points were up for grabs in this series, and the hosts ensured they grabbed it with both hands. India moved to 4th position in World Test Championship points table 2021-2023 and will play their next test match against England on 1st July at Edgbaston.
