ICC Womens World Cup: New Zealand's "Complete performance" in match eight
Sophie Devine was thrilled with her team’s comprehensive 62 run victory against India at Seddon Park on Thursday.
India won the toss and invited New Zealand to bat first where they posted a par score of 260. India were unable to get close to the target and were bundled out for 198.
Devine fired a powerful 35 from 30 balls with seven boundaries to set the platform for her team, whilst Amelia Kerr took up the baton scoring exactly 50 before departing.
Amy Satterthwaite then top scored with a high tempo and player of the match winning innings of 75 from 84 balls before being the second of four wickets for the excellent Pooja Vastrakar who finished with 4-34 from her ten overs.
India’s reply never really got going with Harmanpreet Kaur top scoring with 71 from just 68 balls. Her feisty knock included six boundaries and she cleared the rope twice for maximum’s.
Determined to take family bragging rights, Amelia Kerr followed up her batting heroics with 3-56 from nine overs. Older sister Jess took 1-40 to keep the Kerr family all over India in the field.
Devine said "It was a complete performance. We built partnerships throughout, Amelia Kerr and Amy Satterthwaite batted beautifully.
"The bowling was outstanding, just didn’t give them anything at all. We’ve got variety and options with our attack and it allows us to be flexible.
"We won the last game but it did get a bit close. Today was a more complete performance and hope we can carry it forward to the next game."
In the post match interview, player of the match Satterthwaite said: "Was an interesting one, certainly patches where I really struggled.
"We wanted to take it as deep as we could, set up a platform from where we could launch. We probably didn’t quite do as we would’ve liked to but in the end it was enough.
"Really disappointed with the way I played in that game, probably let them into the game. Wasn’t positive enough and almost brave enough. It’s almost a reflection to go back and look on how I was playing.
"If I walk off playing the way I want to, regardless of how it went, I can accept that. The timing was there in patches and the bowlers were outstanding, the first 20-odd overs were exceptional, we talked about our starts and we couldn’t have asked for anything more."
India’s next game is against the West indies in Hamilton in a day/night match on Saturday.
