Cricket News-England Vs India, 5th Test: England overpowered India by seven wickets
England's revitalised Test team smashed a record chase of 378 to defeat India at Edgbaston, with Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow scoring consecutive hundreds.
The unbeaten 269-run stand between them faded all the memories of the first four days, where India looked to win the match and thus the series.
India will be hurt, as England chased down the highest target ever at Edgbaston to draw the series to 2-2.
While England will be proud of their new era, India will be disappointed about conceding historic fourth-inning chases in their new Rahul Dravid era, twice in South Africa and now at Edgbaston, to lose the series quickly to the hosts.
England's Dominance
England started this match with a struggle. Except for a few wickets in the first inning, England was on the backfoot till the second inning of India. India had already crossed 300-plus targets, but things started changing for England. With an almost impossible target to chase, England started their second inning with an attack and didn't stop till they won the match. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow laid such a solid foundation for the team that the Indian bowlers stood no chance, and England won the game without losing any wicket on the final day.
India's effort but a disappointing loss
Except for the first session on the first day, India looked to dominate the match and were favorites to win the game before England came to bat for the second innings. After they posted a solid first inning total of 416 by two centuries from Pant and Jadeja, India kept their grip over the game till their second innings. Bowlers took wickets, and batters posted perfect totals for England to chase. But after terrific bowling in the first inning, the Indian bowlers looked clueless in the second inning, giving away easy runs with very average bowling. Neither was able to hold the run rate nor were they able to break the partnership of Root and Bairstow and returned with a disappointing defeat.
The Stars of the series.
Jonny Bairstow was awarded Player of the Match for his scintillating performance of 106 runs and unbeaten 114 runs in the two innings to lead England towards the win. Whereas Joe Root was named England's Player of the Series for his 737 runs at a commendable strike rate of 105.28, consisting of four centuries.
For India, Jasprit Bumrah has been entitled Player of the Series for scalping 23 wickets in this series and not forgetting the sixes against Stuart Broad.
The England skipper, Ben Stokes, on drawing the series, said, "When the lads play like this, it makes my job easier. When you have clarity as we have in the dressing room, it makes chasing totals like this easier. 378 would have been scary five weeks ago, but now it's all good. Jonny and Root will get all the credit, but the precedent was set up by the way the openers played against Bumrah and Shami with the new ball. It is all about taking wickets and taking ten wickets. There are no complaints. Sometimes, teams will be better than us, but no one will be braver than us, a quote by Jack Leach. We are trying to rewrite how Test cricket is played in England."
With this long-awaited Test series concluding at a draw, the teams will now collide for shorter formats, 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs scheduled to commence from 7th July 2022.
