England batter Jason Roy joins Kolkata Knight Riders for this season's Indian Premier League
Jason Roy is heading to the Indian Premier League (IPL) after Kolkata Knight Riders announced the signing of the England white-ball opener for INR 2.8 crore (around £275,000).
Roy bolsters a Knight Riders batting line-up shorn of India's Shreyas Iyer, sidelined by a lower back injury, and Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan, who has opted out for the season for personal reasons.
A statement on their website read: "Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have signed England's Jason Roy for INR 2.8 crore for the TATA IPL 2023 from his base price of INR 1.5 crore."
The Surrey batter's last stint at the IPL was in 2021 with Sunrisers Hyderabad, with whom he amassed 150 runs in five matches, while last year he pulled out of representing eventual champions Gujarat Titans owing to Covid bubble fatigue and to spend time with his family.
He was last year dropped from the England set-up ahead of their T20 World Cup-winning campaign after an alarming loss of form across all formats but remains first-choice in the ODI side, registering centuries in South Africa and Bangladesh this year.
Roy compiled 245 runs in seven matches at a 40.83 average and 166.66 strike-rate in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) recently and could use his time at the IPL to push his case for a return to England's T20 squad and familiarise himself with conditions ahead of their 50-over World Cup defence in India later this year.
Kolkata started their IPL campaign by losing to Punjab Kings last Saturday and next take on Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday.
