Dugout News: Light's Off for CSK and MI for season 2022
MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings suffered a shocking batting line-up collapse against Mumbai Indians and got knocked out of the playoffs race
Unavailability of DRS in IPL Clasico
The unavailability of the Decision Review System (DRS) for the first ten balls involved controversy around the first inning due to a high-voltage clash. This was a massive blow to Chennai Super Kings openers, as Devon Conway and Robin Uthappa were ruled out before the system was restored and didn't have any power to review the decision.
"What happens if the electricity goes out? Is the generator exclusively for stadium lighting and not the broadcasters' equipment? DRS should have been utilized if the contest was still going on. Or DRS should not have been utilized throughout the game because it put Chennai at a disadvantage. Mumbai Indians would have suffered if they had batted first," stated Virender Sehwag.
While Virendra Sehwag went against the unavailability of DRS, Harsha Bhogle found some justification in the scenario in a series of thread reading:
"When you lose power, the generators come on automatically, which is how the coverage continues. But some machines need to reboot, and that takes time, and that is when DRS is unavailable. This is the situation all over the world. It has nothing to do with budgets or planning.
I have been at many tournaments and bilateral games that have continued without DRS for a while. That is the global protocol. As soon as the machines are ready, DRS resumes. The production set-up here is world-class. Sorry if that comes in the way of easy anger.
The umpire probably got it wrong, it was called out, and everyone has off days. But I will say this. Many of the comments (remember the outrage on the high full toss in the last over of DC vs RR) have arisen out of not knowing the laws. The umpire was right that day but copped abuse."
His tweets received a lot of roasting from the fans to justify a lapse that shouldn't have been there in a world-class tournament.
CSK's Fine wine MS Dhoni to MI's young star Tilak Varma
While all the teams are looking to hand over the strings to youngsters, MS Dhoni continues to pull the string in the middle for Chennai Super Kings. While the complete batting order stumbled against Mumbai Indians, Thala stood strong to wreak havoc with the ball. He scored 36 off 33 but failed to make it big because of a lack of a partnership. Apart from the bat, his captaincy skills shined as he used his bowlers brilliantly to pick five wickets while defending a low total of 97 runs.
While it was an experience pulling strings for CSK, youngster Tilak Varma did it for Mumbai Indians. He has been consistent in the middle-order and scored 34 off 32 while chasing a target of 97. If it weren't for him, MI would've had an even more challenging time winning this contest even with the low total as they had lost complete top-order.
"He (Tilak) has been brilliant, playing for the first year; having such a calm head is never easy. I feel he's going to be an all-format player for India pretty soon. He's got the technique and temperament. And there's hunger as well," Rohit Sharma told Star Sport.
