Death overs have always been considered match-changing overs in short formats. Bowling death overs is definitely not an easy task, and it does take excellent skills
and abilities for any bowler to bowl at the death. Death overs are a perfect platform to test any bowler. There are a number of newly emerged names in IPL who have proved their ability to bowl at death with their outstanding performance. Let’s look at some of the young guns who have been exceptional with the ball in death overs, irrespective of their inexperience in the IPL.
Avesh Khan
With his sensational bowling performance in the previous edition for Delhi Capitals, Avesh Khan continues his outstanding form in IPL 2022, too, for his new franchise Lucknow Super Giants. The right-hand pacer is impressive with both old and new balls. He has been an essential asset for the team at death. With his excellent hold on his bowling, Avesh has been a tremendous obstacle for opponents to score at death overs. The pacer can clock up to 140 Kmph on the speedometer with his fine rhythm. The youngster was picked up for a whopping amount of INR 10 Crores in the auction due to his consistency at death and middle overs as well.
Arshdeep Singh
The young left-arm pacer has become a key bowler for Punjab King’s bowling unit as he was retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction. Due to his great variations and stunning deliveries, he had been an immense threat for opponents to score at the death. Arshdeep has significantly been efficient for the team, not just in the death overs but middle overs as well. Although the youngster could only manage to take just two wickets in 5 matches, he had been quite economical for the team with a considerable economy of 8.00.
Umran Malik
Umran Malik, who came as a replacement for T Natarajan in the previous year, was a great success for the team and was thus retained by the team ahead of the auctions. The young pacer proved to be effective at death along with T Natarajan and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar. His thunderbolt speed stunned many and earned huge praises. Umran Malik also recorded the fastest delivery of the season, with a blazing speed of 152.4 kmph! His consistent speed has been a great impediment for batters to score at the death.
Kuldeep Sen
The young pacer made his debut for Rajasthan Royals against Lucknow Super Giants and showed his potential in his first match. He fiercely bowled the last over when LSG needed 15 runs to win from the final six balls; defending the score from a power hitter, Marcus Stoinis, he also announced his arrival and thus became a sensation. Delivering an over like this is like a double-edged sword that can either make or destroy your career, but Sen did his job pretty well. The young debutant received huge praises for his calm and composed attitude during the crucial situation. Consequently, the pacer is believed to achieve great things in future.
Harshal Patel
Out of the many names that have flourished recently, Harshal Patel is a big name who has created a significant impact in IPL with his outstanding bowling performance. The right-arm pacer is the current leading death bowler for RCB. The bowler has made a vast difference for Royal Challengers Bangalore’s bowling at the death with his unique variations and off cutters. With an appreciable economy of 5.5 and 6 wickets, the player has given an excellent start for RCB’s bowling line-up in the tournament. Hitting boundaries at death off Harshal is always an uphill task for any opponent as the pacer is fully equipped with a wide variety of variations. He is strongly believed to be a great contender for the national side, too, due to his excellent display of cricket.
Although bowling at death in a shorter format is considered a hectic task for any bowler, these bowlers, with their outstanding abilities and skills, have proved their potential and performed their duty as death bowlers appreciably! We might surely see many of these names developing at a greater level and performing at higher levels as well.
