David Warner and Rovman Powell help Delhi Capitals cruise to victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad
Australian batting elite David Warner took off against his former franchise on match 50 of the IPL at the iconic Brabourne Stadium.
On Thursday, David Warner scored an unbeaten 92 runs off 58 balls to lead his team to a comfortable 21 runs victory.
Warner made his highest score of the season, and Rovman Powell later joined him and scored explosive innings to power Delhi Capitals over the 200-runs mark. In the bowling department, Khaleel Ahmed and Shardul Thakur took three and two wickets to restrict Sunrisers Hyderabad to 186/8.
David Warner and Rovman Powell smash through Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Sent the Delhi Capitals to bat first after Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss. Warner and Mandeep Singh opened the batting for their side.
However, Mandeep Singh was removed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar on the fifth ball of the first over. Meanwhile, David Warner showed full signs of fireworks filled night as he went fire and tongs right from the start.
The Australian clobbered pace sensation Umran Malik for 21 runs in the fourth over, which later helped the Delhi Capitals to end the power play overs at 50/2, in which Warner alone socred 31 runs.
Mitchell Marsh was dismissed in the 5th over by Sean Abbott.
Captain Rishabh Pant joined the crease and made up for a decent partnership with Warner. However, he went out early and with a bang. Pant hit three consecutive sixes and one four against Shreyas Gopal in the 9th over but mistimed the last delivery to end his innings at 26 off 16 balls.
It was then time for the night's partnership as power-hitter Rovman Powell joined David Warner on the other end.
As Warner continued his onslaught, Powell (67 off 35 balls) showcased his prowess as they scored 91 runs for the loss of three wickets in the first ten overs.
Warner was particularly unmerciful to Umran Malik and brought up his half-century style by smashing his fastest delivery (154.8 km/h) for a four. It was the third-fastest delivery in the history of the IPL, but it did not affect David Warner.
Powell was given a chance at 18 runs when captain Kane Williamson dropped him. After that, Powell didn't look back. He smashed Abbott for two successive sixes in the seventeenth to collect 18 runs from it and then did the same with Umran Malik in the ultimate over by hitting four boundaries and one six to take Delhi Capitals' total to 207 runs.
A horrible start costs Sunrisers Hyderabad the match even after Nicholas Pooran's heroics.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad were off to a terrible start after cheaply losing openers. Abhishek Sharma was dismissed at seven runs off six balls, and Kane Williamson departed at four off 11 balls.
Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram tried to stitch together a partnership, but Tripathi was removed in the seventh over.
Nicholas Pooran then joined the crease with Aiden Markram and put together 60 runs in 5.5 overs to keep the Sunrisers Hyderabad in contention. The asking rate rose while Pooran continued his onslaught after Markram was out in the 13th over.
It was 74 from the final five overs that the Sunrisers Hyderabad needed to win, but once Pooran, who had been dropped twice, was out, it was all over.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad were restricted to 186/8 in twenty overs as they wrapped up their third consecutive loss.
With ten points from ten matches, the Delhi Capitals moved to fifth, while the Sunrisers Hyderabad slipped to sixth following their third consecutive loss.
Now. Sunrisers Hyderabad will play Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 8. At the same time, Delhi Capitals will take on Chennai Super Kings.
