Devon Conway and Glenn Phillips steadied the Kiwi ship before switching the gears to take it on the opposition. An excellent Phillips scored 76 off just 41 deliveries
Phillips got a steady company from Daryl Mitchell, who scored a quick firing 48 from just 20 deliveries. Jimmy Neesham and Bracewell ended the proceedings as New Zealand mounted up a massive 215 run on the board.
West Indies, as per their recent showing against India, were brittle and folded up quickly. They will take heart from the Smith-Shepherd partnership and would hope to bounce back strong for the next game.
New Zealand Captain Kane Williamson said, "Nice to get the win. We know that the West Indies side is capable of amazing things, so to get over the line is a good feeling. It's about playing roles for the side; it felt nice to contribute. The small cameos helped to keep the score moving. Power execution is always there in the West Indies team, so it was about staying calm and executing the plans.
West Indies skipper appreciated the NZ bowlers " I would have liked to chase 175, but obviously, Neesham got stuck in a bit. Santner bowled well; Ish also got a few wickets. Happy with the fight, but we need to find a template to chase down these scores. Our Guys need to show their adaptability and be more competent. I'm not going to blame the batters a lot, it happens, and the more games we play, the better we'll get"
The Player of the match, Mitchell Santner, mentioned his experience in CPL "There was a bit of spin, which was surprising because it seemed a good wicket. The lengths worked, and as a unit, we were able to pick up wickets. I've played in the CPL at Trinidad, and you find out what lengths work. It was a bit of a surprise to see it spin, but it was lovely. Throughout the innings, we could pick wickets which are critical against these guys as they bat deep. It (Williamson's return) is massive. He is an outstanding player and an outstanding captain."
