Cricket News: Umpire made the right call when he indicated Byes said umpire Simon Taufel on the dead-ball controversy
Umpire Taufel expressed his opinion over the situation, saying, "The umpire made the appropriate call in signaling Byes after the batters ran three following the ball hitting the stumps and rolling down to 3rd man"
Simon Taufel, a former Australian umpire, has resolved the dead-ball dispute during Sunday's India vs Pakistan match at the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik ran three byes as the ball descended towards the third man, sparking discussion. After a conversation between Pakistani players, including captain Babar, and the umpire about whether or not the runs should be given to the Indian team, it came up for discussion. The runs were eventually awarded in India's favour by the on-field umpires.
Umpire Taufel stated on social media, "After the dramatic finish to the India v Pakistan match at the MCG last night, I've been asked by many to explain the Byes that India earned after Kohli was dismissed off the free hit."
"The ICC Playing condition is below. The umpire made the right decision in signalling Byes after the batters ran three following the ball hitting the stumps and rolling down to 3rd man. For a free hit, the striker cannot be out bowled and therefore the ball is NOT dead on hitting the stumps – the ball is still in play and all conditions under the Laws for Byes are satisfied."
Chasing 160, India was at 45 for four at the midway point, but Kohli and Hardik Pandya (40) stitched 113 runs for the fifth wicket to keep India in the hunt. India won by four wickets thanks to Kohli's brilliant 82. He finished with an unbeaten 82 from 53 balls after hitting six fours and four sixes, including one in the penultimate over a no-ball from Mohammad Nawaz.
