Cricket News: South Africa T20 league signs up international players
The new T20 league of Cricket South Africa that is all set to debut in January 2023 has announced its signing of over 30 marquee international players
The CSA league competes directly with the UAE T20 league as their fixture window clashes. While the ILT20 league of UAE has started disclosing the name of the players, CSA has kept things confidential. The board has not yet revealed the list of players who are part of the league but has confirmed that the number will increase as players enter the auction.
As IPL owners have bought all the six teams of CSA T20, it is likely to see IPL stars for the same franchise in the league. Last month ESPNcricinfo reported that Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, and Jason Holder are among the few names signed for the tournament. Apart from them, Cricbuzz lately confirmed that Faf du Plessis, a former CSK player, has returned with his old team in the CSA league.
The Chennai management is believed to have roped in Moeen Ali too. He featured in the marquee players list of the UAE League (ILT20), too. Still, the English all-rounder prefers the South Africa tournament to be held alongside the ILT20 in January-February.
Lucknow Super Giants management, who brought Durban, has kept Quinton de Kock as one of the signings. Further, Pretoria and Port Elizabeth team owners, Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad have retained South African players Anrich Nortje and Aiden Markram, respectively. In contrast, Rajasthan Royals' Paarl has retained Jos Buttler.
Other details of the tournament
Nearly 33 games will be played over four weeks. The six teams will face each other twice before the top three progress into the playoffs. The tournament will also see players being auctioned later this year. And before the auction, each team will have the capacity to sign up to 5 players: three foreign players, one South African international player and one uncapped South African player. Each franchise can have a maximum of 17 players for the league.
