Cricket News: Royal One Day Cup Group B Review
Group B - Hampshire Hawks and Glamorgan, won while defending, whereas Derbyshire Falcons and Kent Spitfires won while chasing the targets
Hampshire Hawks put forward an all-around performance to grab a 72-run victory over Yorkshire Vikings and secure a place in the home semi-finals. Despite a slow start, Hampshire posted a decent total of 313 on the scoreboard. Aneurin Donald's 76 off 31 powered Hampshire to accelerate. In response, Yorkshire collapsed, losing their top four for 31 runs. The Middle and lower order dragged the total past 200 but eventually fell short of wickets as John Turner returned with a fifer.
Glamorgan edged Worcestershire in a high-scoring game but still not enough to find a place in the quarterfinals. Sam Northeast's 177 off 148 and Billy Root's 92-ball 113 powered Glamorgan to a total of 356/3. Worcestershire had a weak start, losing half of the side for 147 runs. But Ben Cox and Joe Leach revived the innings for them. Ben Cox remained unbeaten at 84, whereas Joe Leach accelerated with his 36-ball 63 runs. However, the efforts failed as they fell short by 19 runs.
Derbyshire Falcons defeated Northamptonshire Steelbacks by eight wickets and seven balls to spare while chasing a high target of 312. Batting first, Northamptonshire Steelbacks posted a total of 311 owing to Lewis McManus' 107 and Tom Taylor's 75 despite the failure of top-three batters. In response, Derbyshire openers Luis Reece (106) and Billy Godleman (87) built a mammoth 204-run opening stand to cruise their team to victory. The remaining work was done by Shan Masood (52) and Harry Came (44) to grab an 8-wicket win.
Kent Spitfires registered a thrilling 2-wicket win over Lancashire Lightning with one ball to spare in the end and thus, confirming their place in the quarterfinals. Lancashire posted 295 as Josh Bohannon (75) and George Balderson (106) built a base for a decent score on board. The remaining batters fell to Nathan Gilchrist and Harry Podmore, who took three wickets each. While chasing, Kent looked to lose early, reeling at 53/4 before Alex Blake and Darren Stevens got into a 100-run partnership. Harry Finch and Grant Stewart took charge in the final overs at the 8th wicket to finish the job with one ball remaining.
