Cricket News: Roger Binny has been appointed as the new BCCI President, succeeding Sourav Ganguly
Roger Binny, a former Indian cricketer and member of the World Cup-winning team in 1983, was chosen the BCCI's 36th president on Tuesday
At the BCCI AGM in Mumbai, his appointment was announced. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been replaced by Binny. Binny, 67, was the only candidate to file for the position of BCCI president.
The election of the next set of office-bearers was merely a formality, as all are expected to be elected unopposed.
Binny served as the Karnataka State Cricket Association President most recently and will now quit the state body. The medium pacer was a key player in India's historic World Cup victory in 1983. He grabbed 18 wickets in eight games, which was the most in that edition of the prestigious tournament.
Binny had previously served on the senior selection committee when Sandeep Patil was the chairman. Whenever his son Stuart Binny's name came up for consideration for inclusion in the Indian team, he recused himself from the proceedings.
According to a PTI report, Saurav Ganguly had numerous talks with stakeholders in New Delhi last week. The former India captain wanted to remain as BCCI President, but he was advised there was no precedent for handing the Board president a second term.
"Sourav was offered IPL chairmanship, but he politely declined because he could not accept being head of a sub-committee in BCCI after heading the same institution," a BCCI source said.
