Cricket News: Robin Uthappa retires from international and domestic cricket
Robin Uthappa has resigned from all forms of international and Indian cricket. Uthappa has received a no-objection certificate (NOC) from Kerala, the last state for which he played domestic cricket, and would be free to take up contracts in global T20 tournaments
Robin Uthappa: " I will spend a considerable amount of time with my young family."Uthappa, a member of India's Under-19 World Cup team in 2004, made his international debut in 2006 and went on to play 46 ODIs and 13 T20Is before winning the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007.
He also won multiple domestic titles with Karnataka and the IPL twice, first with the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014 and again with the Chennai Super Kings in 2021.
Uthappa, aged 36, began his domestic career with Karnataka in 2002-03 and finished it with Kerala in the shortened 2020-21 season. During the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons, he also played for Saurashtra.
He scored 9446 runs with 22 centuries in 142 first-class matches, averaging nearly 41, and another 6534 runs with 16 hundred in 203 one-day games, averaging 35.31.
He scored 7272 runs and struck at 133.08 in 291 T20 games, the last of which he played for Super Kings in the 2022 IPL.
He played in all 15 seasons of the IPL, representing six teams: Super Kings, Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Pune Warriors, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Rajasthan Royals. In 205 IPL games, he scored 4952 runs, hitting 130.35 and averaging 27.51.
Uthappa was recognized for his aggressive batting, which won him an international debut in 2006; he was dropped due to bad form immediately after the 2007 T20 World Cup.
The year before his final few matches for India in 2015, he achieved a rare treble with Karnataka, winning the Ranji Trophy, the Irani Cup, and the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
He then had a productive IPL season for the Knight Riders in 2014, finishing as the tournament's highest run-scorer with 660 runs at a strike rate of 138.
He was rewarded with a return to the Indian team for tours to Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in 2014 and 2015; however, his performances were unsatisfactory, and he was released.
In the interim, he led the Ranji Trophy run chart in 2014-15, as Karnataka became the first domestic team to repeat their title-winning treble.
"It has been my greatest honour to represent my country and my state, Karnataka. However, all good things must come to an end, and with a grateful heart, I have decided to retire from all forms of Indian cricket." Robin Uthappa tweeted.
