Cricket News: MRF Pace academy-History and success

Around 1987, when Indian cricket lacked robust and quality fast bowlers, then Managing Director of MRF, Mr. Ravi Mammen, saw a vision and decided against the market to produce World class pace bowlers for India. MRF Pace Academy was born in August 1987

Thirty-five years later, today, MRF Pace Academy is the world's most reputed fast bowling training institution. It is based out in Chennai with Australian legendary fast bowler Glenn McGrath as its current director. Recently MRF Pace Academy gave Indian Cricket their 24th pace attack in the form of Avesh Khan.

To create the world-class pace academy, Mr. Ravi Mammen reached out to the most successful pacer of that time - Dennis Lillee, and launched their first selection camp in 1987. Sachin Tendulkar was also one of the aspirants in the center.

Five years after its inception, in 1992, MRF Pace Foundation broadened its horizons by opening its facilities to trainees from other nations. They tied up with international cricket boards such as Cricket Australia, the England and Wales Cricket Board, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board, etc.

MRF pace academy has since given the best fast bowlers to India in every generation the world has ever seen. From Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad, Zaheer Khan and Irfan Pathan to recent players like Harshal Patel, Prasidh Krishna and Avesh Khan.

Not just in India, the academy has helped many international legends also in their training. Brett Lee, Shoaib Akhtar, Shane Bond & Glenn McGrath have undergone training at the Pace Foundation.

Cricket Australia is sending their eight players again to MRF Academy

With such a successful history of the MRF Pace Foundation, Cricket Australia has decided to send its players for a 10-day camp which is part of a longstanding reciprocal deal between Cricket Australia and the MRF Foundation.

"It is exciting to renew the partnership with the MRF Academy and provide this group of young players a truly unique experience," said Australian men's selector Tony Dodemaide.

Will Pucovski, Josh Philippe, Teague Wyllie, Cooper Connolly, Henry Hunt, and spinners Matt Kuhnemann, Todd Murphy, and Tanveer Sangha are the players who will head to India to camp from 7th August to 17th August 2022.

Australian batter Will Pucovski debuted against India last year but dislocated his shoulder and, in later months, suffered a concussion, putting him out of action. He was not named in the 'A' squad, but now the move to send him to camp gives a slight hint that he could be in the frame for the upcoming Test tour of India.

These players will integrate with local players in training, a two-day and one-day match. The coaching group includes Australian pacer Glenn McGrath and former Sri Lanka all-rounder Thilan Samaraweera.

As a part of an exchange program, Indian pacers Chetan Sakariya and Mukesh Choudhary will also be seen playing in the KFC T20 Max series.
