Cricket News: Jos Buttler-IPL 2022 hero
Jos Buttler is a name that received huge praises in the fifteenth edition of the Indian Premier League this year. With his incredible batting performance, the Englishman turned out as one of the most phenomenal batters this season
Buttler's impressive performance in the T20 League caught everyone's eyes, and the wicketkeeper-batsman was thus made the white ball captain for England. However, his performance after becoming the skipper has declined, and the batter has failed to maintain the form he carried in IPL 2022.
IPL 2022's hero
The English wicketkeeper-batsman was a prime asset in Rajasthan's batting line-up during the season. This season was perhaps the best of his IPL career as Jos Buttler broke many records, and his bat seemed unstoppable. He scored 863 runs along with four centuries in 14 matches at an outstanding average of 57.3. With these runs, Buttler turned out as the top run scorer of the season and thus won the orange cap. Looking at his red-hot form, the batter was considered a prime batter for England in international cricket.
Below expectations performance from the new skipper
After former English white-ball skipper Eoin Morgan announced his retirement amidst his poor form, Jos Buttler was named as the next captain for England in white-ball cricket. He was also in excellent form, which was supposed to benefit England in keeping their aggressive nature in white ball cricket. He won the series against Ireland, but when India toured India, things changed completely.
Ben Stokes took the aggressive nature and won the last test match against England, and the same aggression was expected from Jos Buttler. But on the contrary, England got back-to-back two humiliating defeats from India in the T20 series and a devastating fall in the first ODI. The complete team failed to perform, and Jos Buttler, as captain and batter, failed miserably. He just won one game and lost badly in the last four white-ball matches he captained. 0, 4, 18, 30, and 4 are the scores made by Jos Buttler in his previous five innings as captain. He failed to contribute with the bat, which was the primary thing that became the reason for England losing.
Did the captaincy burden affect Jos Buttler?
Expectations weigh too heavy, and Jos Buttler is currently carrying a lot. From maintaining his batting performance to continuing the game plan England is following, it feels like it's affecting Jos Buttler.
He opened the entire season for Rajasthan Royals, brisking heat, but during T20I against India, he struggled badly with the swing. It seems like the responsibility of Captaincy took away his sharpness in picking the balls. Earlier, we saw Joe Root relieving from Captaincy for the same reason. His freedom to play was compromised. History has many stories where the captaincy burden has taken away the performance. Many players have left this responsibility from the Sachin Tendulkar generation to Eoin Morgan and the current Virat Kohli and Joe Root generation because of their affected game.
The main limelight of Jos Buttler's Captaincy will be seen this year in September at ICC T20 World Cup. England, who are currently one of the favourites to win the title, a lot of better things are likely to happen with England and Jos Buttler.
