Ireland lost seven consecutive Twenty20 international matches throughout the summer, frequently losing in the final. However, that was overturned when they won their opening game against Afghanistan.

In yet another nail-biting match, George Dockrell and Harry Tector maintained composure to defeat Afghanistan by seven wickets on the penultimate ball of the first T20I in Belfast.

Nevertheless, Afghanistan was still in the game, and Ireland almost botched a very simple chase.

Ireland had nine wickets in hand and needed 48 runs from six overs to reach their target of 169.

The game came down to the final over, where Ireland required 13 runs to win, but Afghanistan was tight and disciplined throughout these overs.

With one ball remaining, Dockrell, who was in striking form, hit Naveen-ul-Haq for two straight boundaries to give Ireland the victory.

Afghanistan was playing an international game after a while, and they struggled to get going on a two-paced, sluggish surface. Usman Ghani persisted to score his fourth half-century in a Twenty20 match, while Ibrahim Zadran's fierce 18-ball 29* in the last overs propelled Afghanistan to 168 for 7.
