Cricket News: India VS England- 2nd ODI Match Reece Topley's six-wicket haul won the game for England
England defeated India by a massive margin of 100 runs in the second ODI on Thursday. With this win, England levelled the three-match ODI series by 1-1, with the final game scheduled on Sunday. India clinched a historic victory in the first ODI, winning by ten wickets but failed to come close to the target in the second ODI
In the historic Lord's, the team batting first won 7 out of 9 times. Despite this record, Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field first. After being put to bat, England was bowled out for 246 runs in the 1st innings, with Moeen Ali (47) being the top scorer. The spin wizard Yuzvendra Chahal (10-47-4) registered the best bowling figures by an Indian at Lord's in ODI. England got off to a decent start but failed to make it big as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Hardik Pandya gave the initial breakthrough by dismissing Jason Roy. Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Ben Stokes tried to play positively but lost their wickets to Chahal in the process. Mohammed Shami dismissed England skipper Jos Buttler with a stunner. Moeen Ali (47) and David Willey (41) made a 62-run partnership and brought a respectable total to England. Jos Buttler, who has been in great form, recently struggled in the ongoing white ball series against India. Captaincy pressure is having an impact on their batting performance of Buttler.
Chasing a target of 247 runs, India was bowled out for 146 in 39 overs. India lost early wickets with the new ball, struggling at 31/4 in 11 overs as Reece Topley dismissed Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan early in the innings with his fabulous spell. It took 4.3 overs for India to get their first runs off the bat. Virat Kohli looked very positive and even played some gorgeous drives down the ground in the powerplay but was dismissed by David Willey with a traditional outside the off-stump delivery. Rishabh Pant promoted up the order and went for a duck off an easy, full toss. Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya tried to rebuild the innings, but Reece Topley didn't give a chance for the Indian batters to settle in the crease. Ravindra Jadeja (29) and Mohammed Shami (23) added 39 runs for the seventh wicket before Shami was sent back to the pavilion with a slower ball by Topley.
Reece Topley was awarded "player of the match" as he picked six wickets and even registered the best-ever figures by an England bowler in ODI cricket.
Although England put up a low total, England's brilliant bowling performance with varied pace was a riddle to Indian batters. Reece Topley changed the fortunes for England after a below-average batting performance from the batting members. Rohit's decision after winning the toss indeed has some impact on the game's result. The pitch offered some seam movement with the new ball, and as the game progressed, it slowed down a bit, making it difficult for the batters. England made the most of the pitch and the conditions in the 2nd innings leaving India in the back seat. The third ODI, now the series's decider, is scheduled for 17th July 2022, Sunday at Manchester.
