Cricket News: India's Virat Kohli dilemma
Virat Kohli is the most extensive discussion around the cricketing world today. He is such a player who cannot be imagined getting dropped from the team, nor he's able to stand on his legacy
BCCI is also trapped in two-way thinking; if given a chance and he fails to perform, they miss out on finding a stable playing combination, and if he is dropped and replaced by someone, probably it could mean a significant release of Virat Kohli.
"If you leave Virat out of the eve of the World Cup, and someone comes in and has a reasonable tournament, it will be hard for Virat to get back in it," said Australian legend Ricky Ponting the dilemma India is facing with Virat Kohli.
Everyone knows the upside of Virat Kohli getting back into the form. A complete dominance yet again by the King could mean an unstoppable force for the World Cups ahead. But BCCI again fell into a trap on returning his touch— resting or giving him back-to-back matches. Experts from the world have their say, different perspectives, and different suggestions.
"If I was India, I will keep pushing with him, because I know the upside. If they actually get him back confident and playing as well as he can, that upside is better than most, " said Ricky Ponting.
Dinesh Karthik said, "Now he will get a good break and will come back all recharged and hopefully, will do phenomenally well. You can never rule out a player of his caliber."
BCCI also looked confused and is trying a combination of both approaches. He is rested for the whole West Indies tour but could get a possible inclusion for the Zimbabwe series if he agrees. The ideology to make him play more international cricket is the one that's believed the most by experts. Since his last century, the way he is getting out has been very consistent, and BCCI could overcome their dilemma if Kohli figures out the solution to his only problem of getting out by an edge on off-stumps.
Dilip Vengsarkar advises, "But yes, he is getting out in the same fashion, so he should stay more alert and work hard on that area because the bowlers are now going to bowl that off-stump line to him all the time. They are not going to bowl on his pads, they are not going to bowl the half volleys to him,"
Sunil Gavaskar also shared, "If I had about 20 minutes with him, I would be able to tell him the things he might have to do. It might help him, I am not saying it will help him but it could, particularly with regards to that off-stump line."
Nevertheless, BCCI fully supports Virat Kohli, giving him everything he needs to prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup. If all these masterstrokes worked, the world would see a more aggressive and dominating Virat Kohli, who will make the counting interesting on maximum centuries in international cricket.
"Hopefully, the break allows him to rejuvenate mentally and regain his form. But without any competitive cricket, it will be difficult, and that is why we want him to play against Zimbabwe. It's his preferred format and will help him regain his form before the Asia Cup, " a selection committee member told InsideSport.
