Cricket News: Ind VS WI - India wins the match in a last over thriller
Axar Patel'sPatel's 64 steered India to their 12th consecutive series win. The winning six from Axar Patel took India to their 12th consecutive bilateral ODI series win against West Indies
After India was on the backfoot with a high required run rate and half of the team gone, Axar Patel changed the game's fate with his power-hitting.
Opting to bat first, West Indies managed to post a challenging score of 300-plus for the visitors. Openers got off to a quick start, fetching 65 runs in 9.1 overs before Deepak Hooda got the breakthrough by dismissing Kyle Mayers for 39. But Shai Hope was determined and built a 62-run stand with Shamarh Brooks for the third wicket. West Indies stumbled a little when Axar Patel took Shamarh Brooks for 35, and Brandon King gifted his wicket for a duck to Yuzvendra Chahal. However,
Captain Nicholas Pooran took things into charge and played a dazzling knock smashing six sixes to score 74 off 77 and stitch a 117-run partnership with Shai Hope. Shai Hope finally scored a 100 in his 100th ODI to become the fourth West Indian batter to do so. A cameo from tail-enders, in the end, took the total to 311 at a loss of 6 wickets.
While Shardul Thakur returned with three wickets, Avesh Khan, on his debut, returned wicketless with an economy of 9.
India planned to go steadily but lost their first wicket at 48 in 10.6 overs. Shubman Gill, like always, worked on a good start but gave an easy wicket on a scoop shot at a score of 43. After India was down with three wickets on 79 runs, Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson glided the innings strongly forward, but they missed their 100-run partnership with one run as Alzarri Joseph took Shreyas Iyer on LBW at 63 runs.
After India was on the backfoot with a high required run rate and half of the team gone, Axar Patel changed the game's fate with his power-hitting.
After hitting his maiden ODI half-century, Sanju Samson messed up with Deepak Hooda and got run-out at 54 runs from where West Indies felt their comeback in the game. India was 212/5 when ten overs were left, and Deepak Hooda was struggling with hitting long shots, but Axar Patel didn't let this pressure slow the run-chase as he went on hitting and finished the game with little help from Avesh Khan towards the end.
Nicholas Pooran said, "Definitely, the last couple of overs we didn't hold our nerves. Last 6 overs, we lost the game."
With two close games, West Indies would be proud and disheartened at both times. The third ODI on 27 July will be another chance for the host to end the game in their favour.
