Only four English batters were able to reach double figures, and the home team eventually went out for 165 in the first inning.
South Africa came down to set the pace and was extremely successful, scoring 326 runs and taking a 161-run advantage.
England was hampered by South African bowlers in the second inning and was eventually bowled out for 149, handing Ben Stokes his first defeat as England's full-time Test captain.
South Africa's Nortje ripped the heart out of the batting with a three-wicket burst after lunch, finishing with six scalps, while Rabada finished with match statistics of 7 for 79.
