Cricket News: England VS India 2nd T20 Vitality series - India seals the series by 2-0 with a game to spare
Not very often do we get to see a match this competitive. England broke India's middle order with successive wickets and put India in trouble
But when England came to bat, India returned the favour with an attack twice as strong and broke England's complete batting line-up to win the series and match by 49 runs.
Attitude is everything. You cannot see better teamwork than this— an all-around team effort from India where everyone took an aggressive approach.
Powerful start for India, but attacking bowling by England
Jos Buttler winning the toss, put India to bat first, but India was determined to play with an aggressive approach no matter what came first. Rohit Sharma led the attack alongside Rishabh Pant as an opener, and powerplay was capitalised to its best but with a loss of 3 wickets. England jumped back into the game when their debutant thirty-four year Richard Gleeson took the top three - Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, which reduced India to 61/3 in 6.2 overs. India struggled after that as Chris Jordan walked down the middle-order, but some firepower from Ravindra Jadeja (46*) took India to a respectable total of 170/8.
Wickets in Powerplay overs again became the critical game-changing moment for India
Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been India's king of swing and the first wicket specialist. The second inning started with Jason Roy getting bowled on the very first ball of Bhuvneshwar Kumar. After that, Captain Rohit Sharma never once backed out from his attacking approach and kept lining his best wicket-taking bowlers back-to-back. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshal Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal and Hardik Pandya all stayed on the game plan, and wickets kept falling. England could never stabilise throughout the innings.
England got reduced to 60/6 in 10.2 overs. David Willey and Moeen Ali looked to cruise the innings in the middle but failed to capitalise and cross the winning line for the team. Bhuvneshwar Kumar's three-wicket haul and support of Jasprit Bumrah's economical spell helped bundle out the hosts at 121 in 17 overs to register the series win.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma on winning, said, "We know how good they are as a team, not just in England but everywhere they go. When you win games, there is confidence in the group, and it is important how the boys feel. I really wanted to see how we perform after a win and challenge us as a group. Brilliant knock under pressure. We wanted someone to bat through and get us a score, Jadeja had scored a hundred here and he carried on from there. He was calm and finished it well towards the end. We understand the importance of the powerplay; be it scoring runs or taking wickets. We look forward to another game tomorrow. We wanted to give guys sitting on the bench a chance, I will go back and speak to the coach about that. We need to keep ticking the boxes and move forward."
The teams will fly off to Nottingham for the third T20I on 10th July 2022. While India will look for a whitewash, hosts will look to counter it. Some good squad changes can be expected from India for this game, as their focus will now be shifting to the upcoming ODI series after winning this T20I.
