Cricket News: David Willey - is another potential all-rounder for England
David Willey has been a critical figure in the rise of England to number one in the world in One-Day internationals. But he was squeezed out on the eve of the 2019 World Cup by the entry of newly qualified Jofra Archer
Having vowed to make a solid comeback, he won the Match of the series in the comeback series 12 months later.
"I had a bit of a patch when I didn't bowl as well, around the time of the World Cup, and I fell out of love with the game. But I've found my enjoyment and love again. When you have that, it makes you hungry to keep improving, expanding your game, and developing as a player," said David Willey.
He is one of the perfect prototypes for an ideal white-ball format player, competitive, innovative with techniques and dangerous when swinging a new ball. He has game-changing capabilities with bat and ball.
His quick-fire 81 was the Superchargers Men's highest score in The Hundred during 2021 and played with a strike rate of 157.1. Even with the ball, he took five wickets in 7 innings, the best figure being 2/9.
In the opening match for Northern Supercharges on 5th August 2022, he smashed 29 off 21 and took two crucial wickets to take his team to the winning side.
Apart from the Hundred, the all-rounder has been a stunning display of performances in other domestic leagues like T20 Vitality Blast 2022 and Indian Premier League 2022.
In the recently concluded Vitality Blast, he returned with 13 wickets in 9 innings at an economy of 7.88 in addition to amassing 246 runs at an average and strike rate of 41 and 142.2, respectively.
After Ben stokes retired, England searched for an equivalent option. Sam Curran has been in the eye, but the ability and experience David Willey brings multiply England's strength in both bowling and death over batting.
In 60 ODI matches, he has 478 runs at an average of 23.90 and 80 wickets at an economy of 5.54. His capabilities fit best in the lower-middle order to compensate for Ben Stokes' retirement from One Day Internationals.
