Earlier the 35-year-old opener has been linked to the new lucrative International League T20 (ILT20) in UAE and the CSA league early next year. However, the veteran returns to his domestic league by signing a two-year deal with his original club.

"I'm excited to return to the Big Bash with the club where I started. I understand that my contribution to the future of the BBL will hopefully benefit the next generation of players long after I am retired," said David Warner. He played one game for the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League's first and third seasons.

Sydney Thunder Head Coach Trevor Bayliss said, "Davey's record on the field speaks for itself and I have no doubt he already has, and will continue to, inspire many, many kids to play and love cricket."

The Sydney Thunder has not yet announced a new captain for the season after the departure of Usman Khawaja to Brisbane Heat. Involved in a ball-tampering incident against South Africa, he was heavily punished with a lifetime ban on holding captaincy positions. And David Warner will wish for the board to overturn their decision on his captaincy ban and thus, make a full-fledged comeback.

David Warner said, "As I've said plenty of times off the record, it's upon the board to reach out to me and open their doors."

"I've got the experience, I'm a leader in the side anyway without having a title," he said. "That's what I'm about, giving back, so if they [younger players] can pick my brains in any way, my phone is always there, they have my number, and they can see me when I'm at the practice facilities," he added.

His inclusion in Big Bash League will boost the league when IPL franchise bagged leagues in South Africa and UAE will provide a tough competition to Big Bash League slotted in the same window.
