Coaches who have changed the teams into a well-oiled team in IPL

A team's success is not just made from the best bunch of players. But it requires a good lead in the form of a coach and supporting staff to help mould their skills.

Like international tournaments, coaches do play a very integral role for every franchise in the Indian Premier League as well. The franchises spend huge bucks on foreign coaches to lead their team from behind and set the stage right for the team for times ahead in the tournament.

Coaches have a huge role in looking at the technicalities, keeping team spirit high before matches irrespective of losses or wins coming in the bag. Their experience gives them strong instincts to take underdogs to the spotlight. The most successful franchises of IPL, Chennai Super Kings, and Mumbai Indians have only a few changes made to their coach over the years. It helps players build a strong bond with the coach enabling them to get to their best potential in a friendly yet guided manner. Few coaches whose contribution to their team has been tremendous are:

    Trevor Bayliss

An Australian who though might not have much experience as a player in international cricket but carries loads of knowledge and wit as a coach in international cricket. Having coached Sri Lanka and England for four years each, the man best in the business was roped in by Kolkata Knight Riders for coaching in 2012. In his tenure of 3 years, he revamped the entire game and helped Kolkata Knight Riders clinch the title in both 2012 and 2014. Trevor Bayliss then resigned from KKR and continued his coaching stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2020. And the very same year, he paved the way for them to reach the playoffs. However, unsatisfied with the franchise's decision on retained players, he parted ways with Sunrisers before IPL 2022 mega-auctions.

    John Wright

Former New Zealand captain and batter has been one of the coaches who changed the fate of teams by his guidance. He undertook his coaching journey by coaching India in 2000 and helped the team reach the World Cup final in 2003. His success as an international coach got him roped in as the coach for Mumbai Indians in 2013. He groomed Mumbai Indians so well that the team won the 2013 season itself. In 2014, MI also reached the playoffs under his supervision. He was the first one to recognize Jasprit Bumrah as one of the underdogs for Team India, and also the one to find a captain in Rohit Sharma. His contribution to Mumbai Indians is uncountable. Mahela Jayawardene filled his footsteps to lead Mumbai Indians.

    Tom Moody

Australian Tom Moody became the coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013, having a commendable international cricket experience. He has won two World Cups in 1987 and 1999. He coached Sri Lanka and helped them reach the 2007 World Cup finals. Before SRH, he coached Kings XI Punjab and had mixed records. His incredible stats as a coach came to notice with Sunrisers Hyderabad. They became champions in 2016 and were the runners-up in 2018. Additionally, the team became a part of the playoffs in 2013, 2017, and 2019 under his leadership. He continues to be the head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad and is working closely with the team to improve their lackluster performance.

    Stephen Fleming

Former New Zealand has been a part of Chennai Super Kings ever since its inception. Firstly, as a player in 2008 and then as a head coach from 2009 onward. He has led CSK to the playoffs every single season except 2020. During this successful run, CSK managed to win four titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021. In the banned years of CSK, he coached Rising Pune Superstars, which failed miserably in 2016 but ended up being a runner-up in 2017. He is the most successful and experienced coach in the IPL and continues his services as a coach with CSK in IPL 2022.

    Ricky Ponting

A two-time World Cup-winning captain and a true leadership character turned out to be a great coach too. After being part of the Mumbai Indians as the skipper, he was appointed as their coach in 2015 and led the team to the title in the same season with a decent overall record. Ricky Ponting then parted ways with Mumbai Indians and joined Delhi Capitals as their head coach in 2018. His impactful coaching was evident in the transformational performance of the young and inexperienced squad on-field. He made Delhi Capitals reach the playoffs in 2019 and the finals in 2020. They even looked strong in 2021 but couldn't make it to the finals. He admires the young talent in the franchise and wishes to help the team clinch its maiden title under his guidance.
