Mumbai Indian skipper Rohit Sharma chose to bowl first, and it was Daniel Sams, who again proved to be a dark horse for the Mumbai Indians as he picked apart their opponent's top order. Captain MS Dhoni tried to get his side to cross the 100-mark but could not do so as Chennai gave Mumbai a modest target of 98 runs that the men in blue chased with 31 balls left to spare..

Mumbai Indians won the toss and decided to bowl first at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The two fiery batsmen in Chennai Super Kings' arsenal are Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Devon Conway, who scored a match-winning 87 runs knock in his previous appearance. However, both of these dangerous batters could not prove their mettle this time.

After Daniel Sams caught his leg before the wicket, Devon Conway had to depart for a duck. However, the decision was controversial, but Chennai couldn't take a review because of the non-availability of the Decision Review System (DRS) as one of the floodlight towers at Wankhede Stadium was out of power.

Then it was the nightwatchman Moeen Ali who also departed for nought after Sams got him caught by Hrithik Shokeen on the fourth ball of the first over.

Bumrah also joined the wicket-taking extravaganza as he caught Robin Uthappa with his leg before the wickets. Still, same as the last time, Chennai couldn't ask for a review of the LBW decision due to a power outage.

In the fifth over, Daniel Sams came back to remove the last remaining of the top-order, Ruturaj Gaikwad. Gaikwad departed for seven runs to make Chennai's condition even worse.

Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni were left on the crease now, but not for long, as Mumbai's Riley Meredith came in to take Chennai's fifth wicket, leaving them at 32/5 after the power play overs.

CSK reached 72 for six at the end of 12 overs after Shivam Dube was dismissed in the seventh over as Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo tried to build a partnership.

Dwayne Bravo shared 39 runs with Dhoni for the seventh wicket and emerged as the second-best batsman with only 12 runs. Dhoni came out with the best batting figures for Chennai, scoring 36 runs off 33 balls.

With Bravo, Simarjeet Singh, and Maheesh Theekshana falling in eight balls, Chennai Super Kings were reduced to 87 for nine after 15 overs

The 15 extras that Mumbai bowlers gave away helped Chennai with their target, or the MS Dhoni-led side would have struggled to cross the 80-runs mark.

Tilak Varma and Tim David fend off Chennai Super Kings' initial challenge.

Mumbai Indians looked comfortable with only 98 runs to chase. However, their performance this season could be summed up with this match, as they also made a challenge out of it.

Ishan Kishan was sent to the dugout in the first over as Captain Rohit Sharma could stick around and smash a couple of boundaries each against Mukesh Choudhary and Simarjeet Singh in two overs.

But Simarjeet Singh could redeem himself by sending Sharma back to the pavilion in the fourth over.

Choudhary then showed Chennai Super Kings hope after taking out Daniel Sams and Tristan Stubbs in a single over. Mumbai was left 36/4 after the power play.

But first, Hrithik Shokeen (18 off 23) and then Tim David (16 off 7) helped Tilak Varma (34 off 32) to take Mumbai Indians to a comfortable win as they achieved 103 in 4.5 overs.

After their eighth loss in 12 games, Chennai Super Kings are now out of contention for a playoff berth. They are currently in ninth place with eight points.

A long time ago, Mumbai Indians were already out of the playoff picture, sitting in 10th place with three wins in 12 matches.

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings will not be competing in the playoffs for the first time in IPL's history.
