Big Bash League: Without Mathew Wade, the Hobart Hurricanes nevertheless managed to defeat the Melbourne Renegades

The Hobart Hurricanes defied captain Matthew Wade's BBL suspension and a late rally by Will Sutherland to beat the Melbourne Renegades by eight runs

After conceding 122 runs in 18 overs at Blundstone Arena on Saturday, the Hurricanes dismissed the Renegades by 114 runs, with Sutherland almost taking his side over the finishing line.

He scored 40 runs off 29 balls after the Renegades had fallen to 8-77 before hitting a holing out to Jimmy Neesham in the deep off Joel Paris in the 20th over to seal victory for the short-handed hosts.

Wade was handed a one-match ban for committing three breaches of the code of conduct in 18 months.

The charges during that period relate to two instances of using an audible obscenity and one example of misuse of cricket equipment.

In Wade's absence, Nathan Ellis was promoted to captain, and former Test player Tim Paine was selected for his first game in nearly five years of BBL.

In-form captain Nic Maddison suffered a duck off just the second ball of the reply as the Renegades' chase continued to deteriorate.

In the middle order, Jono Wells (26) did well to hold together in the face of attacks from Riley Meredith (3-12) and Shadab Khan (3-20) before Sutherland almost pulled off a late miracle.

Earlier, Hurricanes paceman David Moody (3-16) picked apart the Hurricanes' front row before spinner Akeal Hosein wreaked havoc on the lower order.

Opener Jimmy Neesham dominated the powerplay, scoring a quick 28 before his dismissal resulted in a series of wickets.

Moody sent the off-stump of Caleb Jewell (eight) on its way with one of the best knocks of the tournament before Jake Fraser-McGurk caught Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan (14) with a spectacular outfield catch.

Ellis (21) was still trying to steady the sinking ship before becoming the second victim of West Indian powerhouse Andre Russell, who was playing his last game in the tournament.

Player of the match: Riley Meredith was named player of the match for using his bowling to put the Melbourne Renegades on 114
