Big Bash League: Sydney Sixers beat Melbourne Renegades
The Sydney Sixers won the game against the Melbourne Renegades at the SCG by 34 runs.
The Sixers set the Renegades a target of 150 runs, a score much higher after Philippe's performance (55 off 40 balls), but it proved to be enough as the visitors ended up with 115 runs.
Fast left-arm Ben Dwarshuis (4-17) set the tone for the Renegades' innings by serving their valuable new signing Martin Guptill with a brilliant opening over.
The New Zealand white-ball star failed to make an impact on his Renegades debut, playing, and missing three balls before being caught for a duck after a tentative knock.
Captain Nic Maddinson (1) followed shortly after to leave the Renegades reeling at 2-8 in the fourth over until veterans Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh cautiously rebuilt their innings with a 55-run stand.
Marsh was typically nervous at the start but gradually felt more comfortable in his first game of the season after overcoming a calf injury until he was clean-bowled by Hayden Kerr for 28 off 25 balls.
It was up to Finch (36 off 35 balls) to lead the Renegades to an unlikely victory, but the national T20 captain was caught batting out as the required run rate rose to 12 per over.
The victory was all but sealed when Sean Abbott's jump shot to the deep caught Will Sutherland (13) out shortly after the all-rounder had hit a towering six off Dwarshuis to make it dangerous.
The Sixers (3-2) have now won three straight games - all at the SCG - to revive their season, while the Renegades (3-2) have lost two in a row after a promising start.
Nic Maddinson, the Renegades captain, won the stroke play to put the hosts ahead, but Philippe used his experience on the way to his 15th BBL 50.
The 25-year-old often looked for the short boundary, which was just 55 metres from the pitch, and reached the fence twice in an over from Mujeeb Ur Rahman on the way to his crucial half-century.
The Renegades took the lead after Philippe hit a slow ball from Sutherland straight to Akeal Hosein, while Kane Richardson put the hosts in the driving seat with 2-22, but the batters could not live up to their reputation on the night.
Player of the match: Ben Dwarshuis was named man of the game for his brilliant bowling performance. He gave 17 runs with a maiden and took four wickets in his four overs.
