Gurinder Sandhu was named player of the match after scoring 2 for 23 off four overs of bowling in the Sydney Thunder's opening match.
He also scored 20 runs off 16 balls to help his team win.
The Adelaide Strikers also won their first season match, albeit in a more convincing fashion.
Matthew Short scored 84 runs from 53 balls and was supported by Chris Lynn, who scored 41 runs from 34 deliveries.
Short was named player of the match for his performance as the Strikers won by 51 runs.
But all the spotlight will be on the IPL and Afghan star Rashid Khan,who took three wickets in his last match.
