Big Bash League: Matt Short heroics for Adelaide Strikers knock out Hobart Hurricanes
Matt Short made his captaincy debut with a heroic first T20 ton, helping the Adelaide Strikers to the most significant recovery in BBL history.
After the Hurricanes posted an impressive score of 229/4 at Adelaide Oval on Thursday, Short cracked Pakistan paceman Faheem Ashraf for two boundaries in the 20th over to reach his century and secure victory by seven wickets with three balls to spare.
With regular captain Peter Siddle out with a back injury, Short celebrated his temporary promotion by scoring 100 not out off 59 balls.
Chris Lynn hit four sixes in his rapid 29-ball knock of 64 before succumbing to spinner Paddy Dooley (2/25).
Adam Hose holed out to Tim David at mid-off, but was reprieved when third umpire Eloise Sheridan adjudged Faheem's throw to be over waist height.
Hose struck the free blow for six runs - one of three maximums in Faheem's over, which yielded 22.
Hose eventually fell for 38 before Faheem conceded another free hit in the 20th over, allowing Short to strike.
Dooley badly injured his left shoulder in the 19th over while diving to save a boundary, adding to the woes of the Hurricanes.
Ben McDermott (57), Caleb Jewell (54), and Crawley (54 not out) provided the Hurricanes' big scores.
The visitors scored 14 sixes in their innings and looked to be on course to record two wins over the Strikers in five days and inflict Adelaide's fourth straight defeat, but then Short stole the show.
Short was named player of the match for his 100 not out from 59 balls.
