BBL 2022-23 - Game 8: Patrick Dooley-led Hobart Hurricanes beat Perth Scorchers by eight runs

What started as a backyard cricket experiment on Christmas Day has become a breakthrough in the Big Bash League for Hobart Hurricanes spinner Patrick Dooley.

Hobart Hurricanes beat Perth Scorchers. Hobart Hurricanes beat Perth Scorchers.

The 25-year-old inspired the Hurricanes to an eight-run win over the Perth Scorchers in Launceston on Monday night against the odds.

Dooley, playing only his third game in the BBL, took 4-16 from four overs as his side defended 8-172.

The left-arm, who revealed he drew inspiration from Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for his unique action, tossed up a crucial 16th over.

    <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">&quot;It&#39;s probably fair enough…if I was an outsider I&#39;d be making fun of (it)&quot;<br><br>Paddy Dooley doesn’t mind people talking about his unusual action, which is inspired by India star Jasprit Bumrah <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/BBL12?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#BBL12</a> | <a href="https://twitter.com/jackpayn?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@jackpayn</a> <a href="https://t.co/xk7HRSYnJA">https://t.co/xk7HRSYnJA</a></p>&mdash; cricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) <a href="https://twitter.com/cricketcomau/status/1604715476873261056?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">December 19, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

With Perth needing 36 runs from 30 balls, Dooley removed batsman Josh Inglis (62 off 37), leaving Ashton Agar on the ground for a duck and conceding just two runs.

Earlier, Dooley scored two scalps in his first spell, dismissing South African veteran Faf du Plessis (32 off 16) and trapping Nick Hobson in front.

Dooley, who produced his best career performance, named the wicket of du Plessis as his favourite.

Dooley said he has always bowled with the ball outside off, but his action was recent.

After Dooley's fine 16th over, Hurricanes spinner Shadab Khan caught Aaron Hardie catching and bowled in the penultimate over.

Perth needed 14 runs in the last over, bowled by the fast Nathan Ellis, but that was a bridge too far.

With the win, the Hurricanes end their five-game losing streak to Perth. Both teams started the season 1-1.

Matthew Wade's half-century and Tim David's late swing led the Hurricanes' innings earlier.

Wade got his team going with 51 off 29 balls before Hobart faltered in the middle overs, losing 5-18.

David weathered the storm and freed his arms in the closing stages, hitting some much-needed boundaries to remain unbeaten on 46 off 28 deliveries.

Wade was at mid-on off the second ball of the innings after Ben McDermott received an inswinger from Jason Behrendorff and was out lbw for a golden duck.

D'Arcy Short stepped up in his absence, making 35 off 25 balls before becoming the second victim of Tye, who was caught in the deep by Behrendorff.

Short had an ordinary evening in the field, catching two balls, including Inglis in the 30s.

Perth speedster Jhye Richardson got 3-26 in four overs, including scalps from Imports Khan and James Neesham in the 13th over.

Player of the match: Patrick Dooley won the Man of the Match award for his amazing and career-best bowling figures (4-0-16-4)
